2000 Mustang Mach 460 Radio Problems

I need some help. When I turn the radio on or off I get a loud popping sound coming through all the speakers. The volume control goes to 1/2 volumn then sound instead of going louder decreases. Do I have a bad radio, amplifier or something else. Any suggestions would help.

Unfortunitly I cannot afford a new system but desperately could some help with this one. If I knew what caused the POP when turning the radio off and on I might be able to replace the bad parts rather than the entire system.

Sounds like the amps turning on...

I knwo some people put a resistor in the remote wire and it clears it up...As for me actualy knowing of this working I have not done it...I just trashed the mach 460...

Take the stereo out and check the connections on the back. Sounds like the connection or maybe the wire, for the amps is either not plugged all the way into the deck or thier is a short somewhere.

From what I understand - having a 460 myself - they're a bitch to work on. Especially when trying to hook up subs. I have a friend whos a computer whiz and can hook up electronics like the backside of his hand and he even claimed it was a bitch to work on. I recommend a new head unit.

if you have a stock deck and you are getting popping sound then your amps are going bad I come across that all the time at my job. Your best bet is to trash the system like everyone is saying and get something new. It will cost you more to fix it then it would to get a new system put in.

ok here my experience with the mach system...more expensive to work on then to fix...first off if you take it to a ford dealership they are gonna tell you that they need to charge you to bring in a special "tech" to fix it and then charge you again for the work. If you try to do it yourself if will be such a mess and pain in the butt that youll just trash it anyway or even break it all together...so just save up, trash it, get a new one...

If the volume decreases after half way AND the speakers pop when you turn it on, Im saying it is the headunit for sure. I also agree with trashing the 460 and starting over but if it isnt in ur budget to do that, try finding a replacement headunit on ebay and install it. THe volume thing has nothing to do with the amps , i can assure you that. Putting a resistor on the remote wire WILL stop the "pop" but you have to find the correct impedance (which can take quite a bit of trial and error). If a different H/U doesnt fix the problem they sell "thump stoppers" that will stop the "turn on thump". BUt i strongly suggest dumping at least the 460 H/U and getting a good CD/MP3 player (and the wiring harness so it will work with the 460 componants) and work on replacing the 460 from there.

I appreciate all the advice but still have the problem here is what I have done so far. I replaced the head unit with a known working one and still have the same problem with volumn decreasing when I set it beyond mid level so it is not the head unit. I also checked all connections and wires for shorts or lose connections and found none. I have picked up a good used working front amp that I will try this weekend. any others suggestions would be appreciated.

I think I'm out. If it's not the head unit, it's either a wiring issue or a dying amp issue. Is it all the speakers that do this? After reading it again, and it only happens when you turn it up loud, do you think you may have blown the speakers? Check each one to see if you can tell which ones are doing it.

ok here is the problem with you system, one of amps is fried thats the reason it pops and you only get half volume. now for the volume turning down on its own. i had the same problem with my 98. its the little rubber tips under the buttons in the face of the deck. apparently the mach 460 has alot of problems with sticky volume buttons becase one side of the rubber wears out faster than the other, so it gets burried under the lip of the rubber mold. there really is no way to fix it other than to jimmy rig it. what i did was take the rubber pieces from parts of the stereo i dont use like the tape deck and put those in place of the old volume pieces. then put the face back together, or you can take it somewhere and have them fix it but they will charge you like $200.these stereos a big pieces of crap you cant do anything with them and they are expensive to replace.which side does your stereo sound like the popping is comming from?

take some time to learn how it works, and you can enjoy it fully. Only thing I don't like are how they crossed over the 6x8s (although mono front and rear) at 500hz .. they aren't effecient enough to hear anything from 350-800 or so

rebuilt mine .. added a JVC head unit and dual 12" bandpass setup in the trunk .. sounds nice // oh ya .. n my trunk don't rattle either - I HATE that sound //

redrew the schematics too ..

THANKS TO ALL for the advide. I have finally fixed the problem. After removing all the AMPS and replacing them one at a time I found the problem to be a bad front amp which stopped the popping and the volume drop proble. I also had a blown rear speaker. Speaker and AMP off of ebay ran $30 shipped and problem resolved. Now I have great sound. If I could only fugure now why every once in a while the battery drains down overnight I would be happy. I had it to a shop and the mechanic said intermitent short and he could not find it. (FORD DEALER).
