Stereo HelP!
Background: 2000 Ford Mustang Convertible with Macho 460
I have 2 Alpine type X subs with an Alpine amp. I also have a radio I could install if I cannot use the current factory radio. The aftermarket radio I have is 55Wx4 . I was thinking of a few options. First 1 I came up with is remove the factory head unit install my deck. Remove all amps from the car and just directly wire it into my deck. My idea was this the left door lower sub/mid and the tweeter/mid near the mirror wire them directly into one channel on the aftermarker radio as if they were 1 speaker just with a sub/mid/tweeter and let the power be split. Then id just repeat that for all the other speakers. I have 8 speakers total so i figured wired the front left 2 into 1 and the front right 2 into the other. The rear left 2 into 1 and the rear right 2 into 1. Then just plug in my sub woofer power it ect and doit that way. Now the qeustion i have for this method is if I doit is the 55W per channel for my aftermart radio to much for this combination and will it blow the speakers? I know that the power will be divided for each speaker. [So just as an example, if the tweeter/mid did 20 rms and the sub/mid did 35 this = 55W RMS which to be answer im unsure if that 55Wx4 is RMS per channel on the radio or not. Now problem that lies is if this was done the power would not be directly split like that it would be a 50/50 shot? so the 55W RMS would be split into 22.5 so the sub/mid would be underpowered and the tweeter/mid would be overpowered therefore possibly being blown if im correct on any of this. I do not know the RMS for any of these speakers as it would help me so much lol. (its kinda anoyying haven't found it yet.) Option 2: My other idea is just installing the subs/amp directly into the factpry head unit. But it appears theres no additional outputs on it so I think for subs I need a new deck. P.S. i do have the mach 460 with the cd player sepearte and the radio/cassette together if that was needed. Please IDEAS tips info. Please guyz I want my subs in and do not want to wire up without knowing if Im gonna blow stuff or not. |

Number one, the Type X sub is a serious piece, and can handle 1000 watts all day long, and can handle 3000 watts of peak power. I run two 10" Type X's in my car.
You didn't mention if the speakers in the car are factory or not. If everything is factory, then that Mach 460 system is in all likelihood going to have amps & crossovers, either internally in the factory head unit, or more likely, separate units somewhere in the car. You also didn't mention how many watts the Alpine amp is, or how many channels it is. You also need to have a separate sub level control on that aftermarket deck, so I will just assume it has one for the time being. Based on the info you have given here with the equipment mentioned, I would do the following: IF you are going to keep the factory speakers, go out and purchase a passive crossover for each pair of mids/tweets you wish to use. If you are going to upgrade speakers, purchase a component set, which will come with crossovers. Use your aftermarket deck. Run one channel to each crossover, and then from each crossover to each pair of mids/tweets. Then run your Type X's off the Alpine amp. Use the RCA outputs from the sub level outs on the aftermarket deck to the amplifier. Here's where I would need to know what type of amp it is. If it's a mono amp, no problem. Figure out how you want the subs run, and hook it up. Just make sure you don't overload the amp if it's not 1-ohm stable. Read about how to connect subs & control load based on your equipment HERE. Now things get a little more complicated. If the amp is a 4 channel, you now have a few possibilities. If the amp has lots of juice, and it is bridgeable (the ability to turn 4 channels in to 2), you can leave it as a 4 channel, and use two channels to power your subs, and two channels to power the front stage of your mids/tweets, and use deck power for the rear mids/tweets. Or, you can use the deck power for all the mids/tweets, bridge the amp in to 2 channels, thus creating more power for the 2 subs. Ideally when you have separate subs & components, especially when you have healthy subs as you do, you would like to have one large mono amp for the subs, and a separate 4 channel amp for the rest of the speakers. The problem here is if you are using the factory speakers on deck power (ALL decks are notoriously overrated on wattage), with those badass subs, and if that amp has any power at all, your bass will easily overpower the rest of your system, and it won't sound nearly as good as it can. As for your suggestion to hooking the amp & subs up to the factory head unit, this can be done only if the amp has high level inputs. I have done this before when I'm on a budget. This has positives and negatives. Amps run on volts, just as a car runs on air/fuel. The more voltage you put in, the more it can produce. However, with subs, the problem is you then have no way to separate the subwoofer level from the rest of the system, and once you're running real subs with real power, you have to rely on the bass gain in the head unit alone to moderate the sub level. With a good aftermarket unit, not only can you adjust the sub level, you can also adjust the frequency of the bass, allowing the subs to only hit at 'x' Hrtz. If the Alpine amp you have is a decent unit, it too should have some crossover networking in it. That, along with the gain on the amp will still give you some room for adjusting the subs from the rest of the system, but again, without a separate sub level control on a head unit, you will get tired fast of not being able to adjust them whenever you change songs, as every song sounds different and requires a different level of bass.
