I wouldn't try and give the stock speakers more than 25-35 watts RMS.Even then they are gonna sound like garbage!I'd pony up about $50-$60 bucks and at LEAST buy an aftermarket set for the front of the car.If you have an aftermarket CD player already an aftermarket set of speakers would sound pretty damn good until you could get an amp and a sub or two.Just my 2 cents though but RMS on stock speakers are very low because stock head units push a Whopping, whew let me brace myself,Like 18watts !!!! Even the "mach" series stereos push like 22watts RMS.The "mach" speakers might take a little more but not that much more(say maybe 40 watts but wont last long).

So since I do not have an amp but I do have a clarion head unit. What wattage speakers should I get to get a good sound. I beleive I have 2 jensen 5x8 in the rear, 2 I-don't know's in the door and none in the dash.

Do what i did, get speakers that can handle more wattage than your radio puts out then you can turn you vol up all the way as high as it will go and the sound wont distort. I have a 200 watt radio, and the front speakers are 100 watts apiece, and the rear are 300 watt and im putting 50 watts to each speaker and it sounds great.

Thanks, that is the kind of info I needed. As you can tell I know nothing about putting a good system together.

Not to burst bubbles but all these aftermarket head units say"200 watts,50x4 watts, and so on"Really the most powerfull units i've seen onlt push 22-25watts RMS.Though this is enuff to make great sound, personally i gotta have more! Milner62 is right though get speakers that are rated higher than the head unit. That way you can turn it ALMOST all the way up before you hear any distortion.By the way cobralini, you need any advice on putting a killer system in your car you can e-mail me with any questions directly at hpjunkie302@netzero.net

320 yes i know most headunits claim 200 watts but it says 50 watts rms X4 and i took it to a radio shop where i know the owner and asked him if he could test the output before i got the speakers and he told me that on one speaker wire it was just shy of 200watts.

Ive had the radio on 35 on volume and max is 50 i assume i never turned it past 50 cause with the radio set on Powerfull bass, the inside mirror and the outside mirrors just are vibrating so badly any higher than 35 on the volume and i just cant stand it. but thats only if you have a CD in, if you have the plain radio on 25 is the most you can go before its close to sounding like 35 with a cd.

But if you have the money i would recommend getting 6x8 or 6x9 sub`s for your rear deck with tweeters in the center then go with a 3way full range speakers. I went with Kenwood 3way speakers it has the main cone, then the center tweeter cone and then two 3d sound cones per speaker and it gives a great sound. Ive been asked by friends what amp and size subs i have in the trunk and they just cant belive it when i say i dont have a amp nor subs in the trunk.
