Reupholster or replace?

EDIT: I know this isn't the "interiors" section, but I see it hasnt seen any action, and Id rather talk to guys who autox/HPDE/RR anyway

Guys, Im contemplating what's going to happen to the interior of the the GT... its getting a new rug, the sub power/signal rewired/routed, and the rear seat deleted. I plan on doing my own design on the rear seat delete, to allow for storage, and some future secret (nitrous) mod installs.

My dilemma is thus: I really like my stock seats, but my driver's seat is showing its age, and I need to decide what the future holds for it. It doesnt have any massive dammage, but matierial has worn thin on the bolsters, and the padding has seen better days. I feel to do all this other work and ignore the seats would be a travesty

I had Matt at FMR send me the samples for both the stock replacement upholstery material, as well as the Mach1 Retro stuff. I must say they both look good, and the OEM appearing samples did match the stock stuff really well. I am a bit concerned about the thickness/durability of the material for the bolsters though. It does seem to still fill a bit like foam, and not as thick as I thought it would be. I also plan to check with Matt on monday about this, as well as checking the possibility of buying a front-seat-only kit much like the one avail for the Mach1 Retro kit.

Disclaimer: I am not knocking FMR's product, and I am definitely NOT an upholstery expert, just a noob on it, looking for some advice and personal experience from others. I am actually very glad to see the products offered by FMR, and look forward to purchasing many of the things I will need to get my car where I'd like for it to be.

On to the meat of discussion here: I do plan to continue regular autox duty with the car, and feel that this is what caused the premature demise of the upholstery that is in the car now, as well as the other 20 years of service it has given.

Should I recover the seats and try and see what happens, or replace them both with a reclining race seat?

Another option: recover the seats, but buy a SINGLE race seat to swap in for my autox/HPDE weekends and such.

What do you guys think? Im open to any ideas or thoughts you guys could offer, as well as any personal experiences you've had.

Thanks!
Michael

I think this boils down to your time and money resources.

I think in the long run you'll be most happy with a good race bucket, but you're talking about $500+ for anything remotely decent (No, those $250 seats you can get at Kragen are NOT decent). I'm talking Sparco, Recaro, Corbeau, etc.

If you don't have the time for that, then reupholstering is your next best option. The material in the seat IS foam, and if you're gonna be doing some autocrossing, you'll probably want to up the stock bolstering. I'd talk to an upholstry(sp?) shop regarding changing the shape of the foam.

Basically, just don't run out and buy a cheap race seat, 'cause you WILL hate it in about 10 minutes of driving.

I had the seats on my VR4 re-done buy a shop. came out real nice. I had the side bolsters thickened up, a bit more heigth put under my thighs at the front of the seat, and heater elements put in just for comfort. cost me a bit, but the differance was well worth it.
