Oskaloosa Airport, Iowa - 14 August 2011

Just got back from Oskaloosa Airport and the Iowa Region SCCA event held there. It was a 3.5 hour drive from Omaha there and 3.5 back and it was totally worth it. I brought a long a friend who wanted to see what it was all about. Got to see some interesting cars (1946 Jeep YC-J that was lowered and uber upgraded and a Ferrari and a couple of Porches) and got to have a good time. It is always a bit awkward when you don't know anyone so I took to explaining how things went to my buddy. We walked the course 4 times before running. Iowa Region SCCA runs a little differently than Nebraska Region does in that they run in numerical order instead of class order. So far, both NRSCCA events have been by class.

I took 1st in F-Stock, by default as I was the only one in F-Stock. I guess horray? I PAXed in a 26th of 50ish drivers which is far a head of the 56th of 84 from last months autox. I felt the car ran the course very well it was set up to be very quick. The tarmac was pretty sticky. I have to say though, being in the Nebraska Region spoils you when you get to race on the Nationals Field. The Oskaloosa Tarmac isn't in near as good of shape but it still was far more grippy than I had thought it would be. There is a fairly heavy amount of grass and chunks missing out of it but all in all it was a good surface. Speaking of the course, here it is:

1 is a 3 cone deep slalom
2 is a double gate (you go through it twice)
3 is a 2 cone wide slalom
4 is a chicane set up

A very simple course, yet lots of people DNFed this course, either from the not as tricky start or the big loop at the end they would go around the 5 cones rather than go between the 5 cone wall and the single cone (with pointer). Otherwise the course was straight forward and the back half was FAST and fun. The average course time was about 42-45 seconds.

Me? In the 6 runs I got:
Run #1: 48.183
Run #2: 46.755 (second fastest)
Run #3: 47.549
Run #4: 46.352 (fastest)
Run #5: 47.040
Run #6: 47.342

My PAX time was 38.333 which was 26th place. The interesting thing about my times is that the Ferrari that ran today was slower than me except his last run was a 45.8XX something, otherwise he was slower than me all day. That is always an ego boost. Sadly though, a 04 Cobra 'vert was also running slower times than me all day. I felt bad for the Cobra owner, not so much the Ferrari owner although it was a nice Ferrari (sorry don't know the model).

My times were also not far off from the average so that was good.

Anyway, the part you really want to see, VIDEOS! Just a fair warning, the sound quality is really not that great. I thought about adding music but I received several complaints about the music in the last videos so those that complained on YouTube will suffer!

Run #1

Run #2

Run #3

Run #4

Run #5

Run #6

Please feel free to analyze away. I know in a few of the runs the big turn at the top of the course caused some understeer issues due to me coming in to fast and not applying the proper brake pressure. I'm still learning speeds around decreasing sweepers. Slaloms I have down pretty decent though I think.

Official results just got posted. I PAXed at 25 or 39. One placement better but out of less than I thought.

The Ferrari was an F430

75 miles south east. Google maps says an hour and a half drive. I drove from omaha and it was spot on 3.5 hours like google maps said it would be. If you are in the Des Moines area I would check them out, especially if you need help on slaloms and chicanes . If you plan on going to nationals but Lincoln is out of your driving range for a regular event, they race on similar concrete at oskaloosa it just is a bit more used and broken up. Not a whole lot, but it is noticable when driving. It would be head over heals better than a parking lot for Nationals practice.

South east you say? That would mean closer to me. I live in Davenport and I am about 3.5 hours from Des Moines, but if that is south east, then it would probably be more like 2 hours, still may have to check it out. Won't be till next season though.

Google maps says about 2-2.5 hours from you to Oskaloosa's Airport. Kinda long, but not too bad.

Both the Des Moines Valley Region and the Iowa Region chapters of the SCCA hold events at Oskaloosa's airport. I'm not sure on the dates, but I think the DMVR has an event soon, I want to say the DMVR event is April 28th. I would go if I could find someone willing to drive out with me. I can get there no problem but getting home can be a huge problem.
