I just decided yesterday to buy a mustang...

Im 17 and have had my ford taurus for about 6 months. The v6 isnt bad, but i have been in love with the mustangs (and classic muscles) for a while now and a 302 v8 would be amazing. I really want to get a 1st gen mustang but im not sure if i should get a project, or get a moderately restored one. I dont want to spend any more than 10 grand (I only make 9 bucks an hour in a part time job) and i kind of want to have it finished before school is out, (im a senior and i want to show up all the rice burners...). Any ideas/suggestions? I have seen quite a few mustangs out there in the 5-6 grand range and not too bad of condition, mostly minor things need fixed and maybe a paint job. Thanks.

oh yea, and my dad used to have an autobody shop and he is a mechanic so if i do decide to build my own, i have resources. but we have been pretty busy lately and restoring a car takes a lot of time and money. which brings me to my other point, approximately how much would it take to restore a mustang. (that, and i havent told my parents i want to buy one yet and im not sure how they would react. on one hand, i know my dad would love to have one, on the other, parents are parents and im going to be heading off to college either the end of this year or the end of next. )
So what would be a good mustang to start with, I would prefer a v8 and the only ones that seem to be in my price range are the 289's and 302's.

thats my story, sorry its so long

A 289 is a great motor! You can make them haul ass. I like them better the the big blocks. I would say to look for a Mustang with not rust. Give it a good paint job and put in a t-5.

I have a '68 and we got it with 40,000 miles for around $4,000. It has the 289, but this car will still show up a few civics/ricers stock. You dont need a big block car to make it fast(not trying to bash on big block guys, if i had my way, id have a 428 but I cant). And with gas the way it is (around me atleast) I am hesistant to put on too many extra options. I love my mustang and the looks I get when I show up to a car show or even just driving it around town. Everyone knows who I am in that car. Good luck in your search and let us know how it turns out.

The stock 289 is a dog. You HAVE to make them fast and the will come alive. You can make them fast as hell. They don't eat gas like a big block and they don't put all that weight on the frontend. If I had to drive it on the street I would pick the 289 over the 428 everytime, hands down. Don't think they 289 is slower this a 428 because it may not be.

I never said that the 428 was the best motor option. That is my dream motor option in the mustang. The 289 was my DD for a year and a half. It is not a dog. It has all the power needed for a DD. And why are you bashing on the 289? Don't you have one?

It sounds good, but I would see it in person unless it is just too good a price to pass up.

Sounds kinda like the car was junked but the restore sounds solid. Have you had a chance to see/drive it yet?

no, not yet, he mailed out a cd with a bunch of pictures that way i can see if its worth my time before i drive out there to see it in person. So far though, it seems like a pretty good car that could use a little bit of TLC.

Sounds like it was a rusty car. Better really be carefully one this one. Was the jab done right? Who knows?

And I love the 289, but I know that a stock 289 needs work to be fast. People just don't know how fast they can be.

Whats with the other Mustang in the pic? Does he rebuild Mustangs? It looks nice, but you better watch this one. The price seems to cheap. Whats wrong with it?
