1966, 289 with 3 speed trans. . wand to upgrade to 4 or 5 speed, any suggestions??

Talking with friends, just put a rebuilt 289 bored 40 over with .512 cam, 351w heads. three speed transmission doesnt seem to be cutting it on the highway, and looking to re gear the rear end, has stock gears, im assuming are 355's. want to upgrade to a 4 or 5 speed trans if possible. dont know if any trans from any other years will fit.

4 speed has the same final drive 1:1 as your 3 speed.

I would go 5 speed then you could use a 3:73 rear gear or a 4:11

with any ford 5 speed you can buy the conversion kit to add a 5 speed to your bell housing and clutch set you already have. The Kit is $475

what mustangone said.i have a 92 gt 5 speed with 4:11 gears.2200 rpm at 62 mph.

the car has an auto trans, forgot to mention that, i would like to keep it that way, are there any 4 or 5 speed trans for the 66 289 block?

We did need to know that 1 little detail. your looking for a AOD it a 4 speed.

Jegs TCI AOD $1599

There is not a 5 speed auto that was made for a 302. There is alot of 5 speed autos for 4.6 mod motors
