Starter issues

I replaced the 289 in my 65 with a 351 w..using a t-5.

My starter will not go far enough in to turn the Flywheel?

Do I need a 351 starter?

What year bell housing did you use?
What year is your 351W?
Witch Flywheel you use 157 28oz or the 164 50oz?

351W made from 1981 newer use a 164 tooth 50 oz fly wheel.

Im betting you used a 157 tooth flywheel in a 164 tooth big bell housing.

Make sure you use the correct set up 157 tooth flywheel for a 157 tooth bell housing.
And 164 tooth flywheel in a 164 bell housing.

and if you mixed the 2 you can order a 157 50oz flywheel or a 164 28oz flywheel.

What year is the motor?

A ford Starter for the small block 289- 351W is the same from 65-75 just there is 2 of them 1 for a Auto, 1 for a standard. This year range differ very little.
