Burning oil

My car is using a lot of oil. By a lot, I mean about 1 quart every 500 miles, and it doesn't leak at all. After the engine was built, it was only driven about 50 miles in the first two years, and now it's driven on a pretty regular basis. It has apprx 20,000 miles on it, and it's smoking a little, but nothing real bad.

With the large oil consumption, I decided to run a compression check, and it broke down like this.

I don't think you could ask for much better than that. Could the valve seals possibly be leaking so bad, as to cause 1 quart every 500 miles to disappear? I'm sure they're leaking some, because of the puff of smoke it blows on start up, but there isn't smoke while driving. It smokes some under hard accelleration, and when you let off the gas, but it's not terrible.

Any thoughts?

Combo valve seals and/or valve guides. Seals can be replaced with head still on, valve guides require a valve job with heads off.

That just seems like a lot of oil to be going through the valve seals, but I guess it's a cheap easy thing to try first.

Ya I would say start with the valve seals. I also read that:"After the engine was built, it was only driven about 50 miles in the first two years" This could also be a reason for the problem?
I also read an article in a technical magazine a while back that said:
"High operating temperatures cause lower grade materials such as nitrile to harden and become brittle over time. Eventually, this can lead to cracking, loss of oil control and seal failure. When a valve stem seal loses its ability to control the amount of oil that enters the guide, it can cause a variety of problems."
Good luck.
