Top End vs Bottom End
I am trying to get my motor build planned out and would like some helpful comments. 68 coupe with original 289 2v. I am looking at a top end build kit from Summit. My question is can I keep the bottom end stock or should I build it up also.

Unless you are planning on going EFI I wouldnt buy that TFS kit because you are buying extra stuff you dont need (The upper intake). Just get the heads/rockers/cam and save you some money. If the bottom end has never been refreshed I would go ahead and build it at the same time if you have the cash...

all the extra pressure on top may kill the bottom.

If you going to keep stock bottem end I would look for 58cc heads not the 61cc heads.
That way you can bump the compression up a little. But if you go the rotating assembly you go with flat tops and stay at 10.0:1 and keep the 61cc heads

my EFI setup the wires and harnesses werent actually too bad at all - I had about 3 main wires to hook up... of course there are a few odds and ends that have to be done that get kind of time consuming and costly - I ended up nickle and diming myself to complete it

I'd freshen the bottom end with some better rods and pistons for sure. Then have the rotating assembly balanced. Then I would go with a set of AFR 165 heads and one of the Comp Cams XE cams. A Holley Systemax is an awesome intake for EFI applications and you could probably find these parts cheaper than what a Trick Flow kit cost. If you wanted to stay carb'd, I'd go with a Edelbrock Air Gap intake manifold and a Holley or Demon style 650cfm carb.
