Trying to buy 69 Mustang...advice?

Hi everyone, this is my first post, my first car was a 65 Coupe and I loved it but ended up selling it while I was in the service (stupid!) Now I'm looking at buying another stang but this time I'm thinking about going for a 69.

It has a rebuilt 250 straight 6 that runs great and is very clean, rebuilt auto tranny, fully restored front end, new carpet, interior is VERY clean, overall car is very clean and complete except for the paint job is showing it's age, has a couple of dents in one of the doors, and some of the small crome trim and lettering is falling off. No rust that I can find anywhere. He's been restoring it for a while and says its about 90% complete. He is asking $5500 for it, does this sound like a good price?

I'll probably end up replacing the motor eventually with a 302.

I'm not a Classic guy, but $5,500 for a 69 with no rust is a fair price... dings / bad paint or not. Best way I've found for checking prices is going to eBay and doing a search. Expect to pay another 20-30% for the same thing locally.

If you are going to put a V8 in it, you would be better off saving your money and getting a V8 car. You have to change a lot of things other then the motor and the transmission. Its alot of time and money.

+1

ya you gotta replace the front axle and put in stronger suspension. better off to stick with a v8 car, unless you wont be doing it for a while and just want to enjoy this car as it is for over a year or two.

$5500 is an average price for a V6 coupe that's in good condition.

Forget the 6 cylinder- you would have to replace the differential to handle a strong V8. The diff in the 6 is pretty weak. I had a 69 with a 351W and console shift auto, drove it for 16 years. This combo is a great choice for a driver. Many hotrodders prefer the 351W with the 2 barrel heads to the 351C that had 4 barrel heads. You may find that the 69 coupe can be bought for 5 to 10 thousand dollars less than a comparable condition 69 fastback- good value if you like the looks of the coupe. The earlier mustangs had awful transmissions, while the 69 console shift auto can actually be shifted manually to hold the car back on long downhills, or before entering corners. Earlier transmissions would not hold 2nd gear . The toploader manual 3 speed trannys were simply awful .

Low mileage that can be documented is worth extra $$ when looking at 60's mustangs, since the cars were not designed to last many years, and if you are after a DRIVER, as opposed to just a showpiece, keep this in mind. The place to spend your bucks on upgrading a decent mustang is on the suspension, not the powertrain. Even when new, the steering and suspension on these cars could not keep up with the V8 motors. EVERY rubber bushing in the suspension and steering system should be replaced with new ones. You wouldn't believe what a difference this makes in driving comfort and performance. When you find a good one, have fun ! I often wish I still had my 69.

I'm pretty sure that all the autos in 69 with a 351W had the FMX tranny, and if you want to have any power at all it should be scrapped. You're way better off with a built C4. The FMX has a cast iron bellhousing, and some had a cast iron body as well, so they're heavy. Not to mention they rob a considerable amount of hp. If you're not concerned about racing the FMX is fine.

The 351W with the 4V heads are much better than the 2V heads.

Only if you want more horsepower. If the car can't breathe, it car make more horses.

I think it depends on what you're good at fixing, I would rather buy a solid rust free body and do what mechanical mods I wanted to make it hold up to what ever horsepower engine you're gonna put in it....just my 2 cents

i say dont go for it. You will regret getting the inline 6. Especially if you are going to upgrade to a 302. you can find a 69 in similar condition but with a 302 for anywhere from 5500 to 6000 plus the body work is going to be a lot of money.
