Oppinions On the Top Loader?

So I've heard the Top Loader transmission is the greatest tranny of the muscle car era. So what all do you guys think about them? Do any of you have them? Are they worth the effort or is it easier to just find yourself a C4 or C6?

It is cheaper to get you a C4...

The Top loaders are great old tranny, T-5's are Alot better.

The best tranny as far as what? They're very strong, and they have a good fun factor, but it really depends on what you're looking to do. I have one, and I like it.

Oh i was just curious what the oppinion around here was on them. Yeah i know a c4 would be easier to come by. Would you get better milage with a toploader than a c4 (assuming the toploader is a 4 speed and the c4 a three)? And I've always been told the T-5 was a week tranny... Which is the best tranny for a daily driver/street car (that aint afraid to perform at the strip too)? For a classic Mustang or other classic Ford?

T-5 is a good tranny not to be used on motors over 300 tq. We use new ones, They are the best for fuel milage.
We Use the TKO 5 speeds on our 427 stroker motors they are good up to 600 tq.

top loaders and C4 get about the same milage both have 1:1 final drives.

Your can get a late 70's over drive top loader that has overdrive.

The ratios on the overdrive toploaders are no fun though. Since they were designed for trucks, 1st is a granny gear, and the 3rd-4th shift is like skipping a gear.

what about when used with a 390? I know that wont match up to a t-5 or any of the newer tranny's.

you can use the adapter plate for the 302 and put the t-5 on the 390.

huh... didn't know you could do that. wouldn't the 390 almost have too much torque for it though?
