Getting a car title in Kansas

I just wrote an extensive e-mail to a potential buyer of my 1965 mustang. I thought that this may be helpful information for those who are looking to get their mustang titled.

____
I did not use a title service. I titled the car on my own. I bought the car in Missouri with no title but just a Missouri '1957 form' bill of sale. The car was purchased by the missouri owner in a repo/forclosure auction and the owner did not have a title for it. I did a little research on it before it was delivered and found out that the state of KS allows you to get a Brand New & Clear Title when purchasing an antique car from Missouri. So here's what I did.

1) Antique: Car must be an antique (35 years or older)

2) Missouri Bill of sale: Missouri's bill of sale form must be signed and dated by the previous owner (KS will not allow you to buy a vehicle in their state with a bill of sale only. Missouri does allow you to buy a car with a bill of sale only).

3) Vin inspection: Must have a $10 antique vin inspection done by the Kansas DMV to make sure that the car is not stolen or carry liens and to make sure that it is originally equipped so that they can classify it as an antique If it had a newer engine in it or major improvements to suspension, frame, etc. it would be classified as a regular automobile. I also expressed to the officer that I didn't want a non-highway brand because I would be restoring it and I wasn't sure if that brand would be carried over on the vehicle history. Even though the vehicle is obviously non-highway, he passed the car as a normal highway automobile. Unfortunately, this meant that I had to get highway insurance on the vehicle as well.

4) Register it with your county: I brought in my Drivers License, Bill of sale, inspection report, and Proof of Insurance. (I didn't register it as a non-highway vehicle because I didn't want to potentially brand the title)

I did contact a title company for information, and I learned that if you've lost a title, or if you don't have the title, you can call any state's DMV to see if they have a record of it in their state. (YES or NO is the only information that the DMV will give you however). If there IS a record of the vehicle then many times a sherrif or police friend will get you the title holder's contact information so you can ask them to send you the title or file for a lost-title. If there's no record of the vehicle, and the vehicle was sold by a Missouri resident with a bill of sale then you can start the process of getting a KS title for the vehicle.
