Water pump ???

I'm building a 393 stroker, it's a 74 block and I want to run a passenger side inlet water pump.
Has anyone run into this or know if using a timing cover for a passenger side inlet water pump will do the trick. I have heard that the water pump's are different lengths. which will mess up the belt alignment. I have seen this done but the guy did not know how it was done, he had bought it like that.........

Don't had a clue, but could you goto the parts store and have them get both water pumps out and look at them side by side and tell?

S#!t, I'm sorry. Im going to have to go back and look again. I was looking for the 302 not the 351.

let me tell you what I did read.

He typically lumps the engines together and doesn't give specifics to just one engine. The only clearance problem listed was if you have a dual roller timing set your oil slinger won't clear the chain. as for one water pump being larger than the other I don't believe so. the pics all looked to be the same height, but you know how pics are. I'm pretty sure he would have mentioned something if they were though, as he mentioned the 1994+ were considerably smaller pumps. You might have to buy a new harmonic balancer if you do this, I will double check that for you. But I do believe that the marks will not line up with the older cover.

the name of the book is How to Rebuild the Small-Block Ford:
From Tear-Down to Break-In written by George Reid.

I've done this on two different cars and never had a problem with length. I think the only difference is the inlet side. I am pretty sure all other dimensions are the same.

289-351W pumps are the same with the exception of the serpentine reverse rotation pumps.

Oh, I know I was just messing around.

I forgot to check on the harmonic balancer for you last night. I'll have to write myself another note.

btw why do you want to go with the left hand inlet waterpump.?

you might need a new harmonic balancer then, if I recall correctly your 289 has a 28 oz counter weight and your 351 takes a 50 oz weight. I'll look it up and get back to you.

50 oz was on 5.0 engines and started around 86.

You want a pre 70 style water pump to get the inlet on the passenger side and keep the normal rotation pulley. Get a pump for a 64-69 Mustang with a 289 and it will mate up to your 351w timing cover.
I did the opposite in my car, I went from a passenger inlet to a driver inlet pump so I could run an aluminum crossflow radiator. I bought a high flow Edelbrock Victor Jr pump for a 1970 Mustang. I recommend a high flow water pump for any engine, it will help keep your engine cool.
