Carter Carb vs the Elec Fuel Pump
So, I have a 600 CFM Carter with a generic electronic fuel pump. I just installed both on top of my 90 302 roller engine in my '69. Now when I go to start it the fuel pump is pushing to much fuel THROUGH the carb and filling all of the cyl with fuel. So much so that the cyl won't even budge. The first time that it happened I pulled the plugs and fuel poured out. This time I haven't even touched it. The first time I drained the oil and it smelt more like fuel than anything. What the hell is wrong. The fuel pump is supposed to push a max of seven pounds and shut off when the pressure is sustained. Any idea? I'll get the make of the fuel pump later to see if anyone has heard good or bad.

You must be using a high pressure fuel pump, ment to be used on a EFI system.
If you use one for a carb it will only pressure up to 7# of pressure before it by passes itself. Change your fuel pump to a good one for a carb, Your Motor is worth it. |

It is for a carb. It's just not by passing. I'm going to by a regulator for it and see how that ends up working for me.

possible the needle and seat could have a peice of trash in it.where is the pump mounted?should be at the tank and have an inline filter between it and the carb.be sure to use new hose so little bits of hose dont break off.

The pump that I got is a pusher, so you're correct it is by the tank (in the trunk to avoid water and rocks. The pump itself has a filter that connects on the tank side of the pump. I'm thinking that the carter needles are just worn out enough that it won't hold up to that much pressure. I'm going to get an inline regulator and mount it on the sidewall to see if simply lowering the pressure to about 4 lbs will help. If that doesn't work then I'll be going to a new 600 CFM edelbrock. Either way it will have to wait until I get back. I'm headed out to the desert for 6-8 months, so thank you guys for the help. I'm sure that I will come up with a few more issues once I do get back. If anyone has a pick of the clutch setup for a stock 69 please pm me them. I have adopted a fox clutch setup and I'm wandering about the diff in the two. Thanks again.
