Should i do a 5.0, 5 speed swap or, keep it a 200 I6?
I need your help with this one! I have a VERY clean, original pony interior, 3 speed, 1966 coupe. The motor took a dump on me and the oil is comming out of the over flow tube on the radiator. The funny thing is, the water is not in the oil, just oil in the water! So, i checked around and found that, if i rebuild the inline 6, it would cost about the same to just put in a 302 with a five speed. I have the 302 and trans already but, the car is all original and, from what im told, it's a rare one. I dont know how rare it could be but, it's pretty nice. I got it for a birthday gift. What would be the best thing for me to do?

i would keep the i6.rebuild the block and put a 250 head on it.that will provide a little more power.or you can get crazy like me and go all outwith the i6.

Welcome to MM Forums...
That is a Very Nice Ride you have there. It is still alot cheaper to go with the I6, With the 302 you have alot of little things you have to change over. Like Motor mount, frame mounts, accel linkage, radiator, transmission, bell housing, clutch, flywheel, z bar, exhuast, air cleaner those are thing you have to change. If you do it right the front and rear suspension. I would keep it like it is and rebuild it. It looks Great. Good Luck |

This is the mild version.
![]() EDIT: I'm performing the T5 swap on my 67 most likely thursday since my trans crossmember didn't show up today.

Thanks guy's! Im love'n all of the advise! I just found a guy on CL that is selling a 200 I6 with headers and a 4 speed toploader, complete! Im going to check that one out. Im going to try and rebuild it myself so, i think i should have one on the side, just in case things dont go as planed. I will keep you all posted on how things go. I'll take a few pictures as i go along. Im going to need a few pointers and, i know now that, this is the place to be!
Also, i have just about 90% of the parts you say i need for the change over, mustangone but, i think i will sell them or, i have a 1964 Falcon convetible that i can put all that stuff in. I will keep you posted as well. Thank you all!, for your time. ![]()

Yeah, I'd stick with all original. It is rare to see a super clean classic that still has the 200 in it. Pick up a foxbody if you want to start modding a 5.0

+1. Its to clean. You will ruin its original appeal if you change the engine.

I also have a 66 mustang that was a 6 cyl 3 speed. no pony interior, but im not a fan of it besides the center console. i took my 200 3spd out, cleaned it up to spotless, wrapped it in blastic, and have it sitting on a shelf in my garage. im currently adding a 302 5speed into my car, thinking about EFI/blower on top of that, if you have the money, i would suggest a lincoln versailles and takes the whole brake systam, the 9'' rear end, and various other parts.
