Paint Job/Racing Stripes

Hello:

I have a 1966 Mustang, hardtop, 302, automatic. I just bought it a few months ago from someone who did a number of modifications -- engine and body including racing stripes.

I am planning to have it painted and want to put the racing stripes back on. But the paint shop said 1) they'd paint it but I'd have to wait a month or so to let the paint settle before they'd put the racing stripes back on, and 2) they want to charge half as much to put the racing stripes on as the entire paint job.

It seems too expensive to put the stripes on and it seems like it will take too long. Since I have never done anything like this before, I was wondering if anyone out there might have some advice.

the stripes are different sizes at different points so it takes time to lay them out and mask off the car. a good shop should be able to put the stripe on before they clear coat the car...

Your ride looks great!

Interesting.

The stripes are put on before the car is painted. The paint shop guy led me to believe it was the other way around.....

if it were me... i would find an honest body shop, stripes, unless put on like on the new mustangs where it is done at the dealership, are always done with the paint job before the clear coat goes on. i don't personally know anything about body work except for what my friend (who works in a body shop) tells me.

I don't like vinyl stripes, but a lot of people are doing them. It gives you more options down the road. It wouldn't be my choice, but it's something to consider.

1st Thanks for the complement
2nd after the car is in base coat then they lay down the stripes and clear the whole thing. In my case I helped a friend paint my car we used base coat then cleared the blue, sanded the clear and taped off the stripes we used acrylic enamel for the stripes its a single stage meaning it needs no clear coat. sand and buff and your done !!!

Hope this helps

Thanks for these replies.

I don't know why the paint shop guy seemed to give me the runaround at first.

In any case, I spoke to the owner last Wednesday. He explained the process the way you all did -- stripes are put on after the car is in base coat

The shop is a “trusted,” well-known chain in Northern California -- go figure!?

The owner suggested I bring the car in again on Friday (last Friday) and he'd do another estimate and answer my questions, but it rained that day. (So, as you know, nobody goes outside in the rain in California. Ha!)

So, I'll check in with the paint shop owner today, if it stays dry and let you know....

As for the vinyl stripes, I have considered them, but when I bought my car, just a few months ago, stripes were already painted on, so I thought I’d keep it that way.

The car has a few dings here and there and a front end body kit that's black but the car is dark blue. So, I want to paint it and get everything looking the way I want it -- dark blue with stripes.

I’d post a picture of my car, if I could figure out how to do it, or maybe I just have to wait until my membership allows it….

Also, because of some creeping rust in the trunk compartment, I need to use the metal brush/rust retardant paint treatment and I need to replace the truck lid because of some pretty significant rust wedged up in hard to get to places.

Well, I hope you get a good quote on the stripes, and good luck with the rust issue.

I went to the paint shop today. Things are shaping up real good. I'm convinced they know what they are doing. Everything's in writing and they answered all of my questions. I'll bring the car in to have the work done within a month (I hope), after I deal with the trunk. Thanks to this forum, I had a pretty good idea of how to approach this project.
