wire problem....always hot!!!

I just installed my new engine. Set up the harness the same way i did last time. I have a 1 wire alternator, HEI distributor that has a constant 12v source running to it for the factory harness, I kept the same starter and hooked it up to the siloniod as well as a 10 gauge wire to ground the starter. I also put a 10g wire from the engine to the firewall to ground the engine. My problem is that the car is live(hot) always now. I try to hook the bat up and it just keeps sparking at the post? Can anyone help me with this. I want to hear my new motor!!! What did i do wrong?

ok fixed that on my own. had siloniod crossed. But now im trying to start and it will turn over but im not getting fuel. I have a new holley mechanical pump. Does it take alittle while to get the pump to pump the gas from the tank after having it sit for awhile?

Usually not too long! Sure you have gas in the tank? Looking down the Carb. Pump the gas with your hand, if you see it shooting a small stream of fuel into the Throttle, you're getting gas. then search for something else. Like fire to the plugs. it may be a backtracking issue to find what it is..

Fuel, Spark on time and air is all it takes to fire it.

So check for fuel shooting into the carb. first.. Then maybe the dizzy 1/2 turn off?? But usually if the Distributor is 1/2 off the engine will still bang and sputter along with back firing through the Carb.

If you are not getting fuel to the carb, I would get something to hold a 1/4 of a cup or so of fuel, (NOT THE GAS CAN!!) and pour it down the carb, Put your air cleaner back on the Carb. before firing it, a backfire could destroy your wiring and other stuff up to the whole truck!
If the engine runs but dies do it again, If it dies again, you have another problem. Fuel from the gas tank to the carb.. If that's the case, You'll have to find and open the obstruction. (If it's not the fuel pump)

Carb. fuel filter plugged, floats in the Bowl set too low, Etc.

i pulled the braided fuel line of the hard line going to the tank to check the suction. I had someone crank the motor over while i stuck my thumb on the line from the pump and nothing. Didnt feel any suction? what yall think. Could the fuel pump lever be in the wrong postion. Do i to have the cam in a certain postion before i put the pump back it or what. I cant figure out why the new pump wont work unless the lever is sitting in wrong spot.

pull the pump and check to make sure that on the off chance you didn't get a bad pump. when you put it back make sure the eccentric is in the up position, and you should be good to.

found my problem. Guy who i bought the motor from built the motor for a electric fuel pump, not mechanical. didnt tell me this when i got it but oh well. Now im going to have to get a good electric fuel pump for it because im not going to disassemble the hole front of the motor again. This would be my 3rd time to do so. Does anyone know a good electric fuel pump to buy and from a site to get it at. I need it here by tuesday. I dont need anything to expensive. Just the pump, no regulator. I want something around 120-140 gph at 9psi or under.

There is a rod that runs the manual fuel pump. Easily replaced by only removing the fuel pump and installing the rod..

As far as electric, Just hit Summit or Jegs for the Holley street version. It is self regulated for the street.

Rod?

Just to let you know the ford mechanical fuel pumps run off a fuel eccentric.

It mounts on the front of the timing chain and the fuel pump arm ride under it.

haha it happens to the bust of us. For an elec pump I have had good luck with the summit branded pumps, cheap and work well. Fairly loud but so are most aftermarket fuel pumps. Gotta love the simplicity of a mech pump though, too bad your engine doesn't have the eccentric installed.
