Advice overhauling a 67 GTA

I'll be pulling a gta with a 390 off the road soon for some overhauling. Main issues are that it blows blue smoke and requires leaded gas. I've got a haynes, any other manuals I should be looking at?

Main plan is to drop the heads off at a machine shop for new valve seats, can/should the heads be decked for higher compression?

With luck its head gaskets, in all likelihood it'll require being bored out, anything in particular I should have done while the engine is out and torn down?

Finally, fuel economy sucks badly, partially due to needing an engine overhaul, partially due to a big engine and a bigger foot and partially due to a dead weight 3sp auto. Are there any stock looking transmission swaps that can be put in? The car is taken to shows and has always done respectably in the past so keeping it stockish would be best but there must be a later 4sp that will fit.

well my dad built a 66 fairlane a while back and he put a c4 in it with a 3000 stall and as for the engine he put 429 cobra jet heads on it,radical cam of some kind, intake manifold from edelbrock a 800 cfm holley and the car would pick the front end up on a ragular basis on street tires.

Things to do since the motor is down:

I would down this,

Pull the motor
Have the block checked bore to the next if it needs it.
have the crank checked, turned if it needs it.

I would change the heads to these, These fixes alot of things, Harden seats better valve guilds, smaller cc higher compression and only cost a little more than a head job.
