FMX to C6 linkage prob
Hello everyone, I am new to this forum.
I have a 73 Mach I that I have almost completed a moderate refurbishment. Due to the excessive work on the motor (450 HP), so I swapped out the old FMX for a rebuilt C6 with a performance shift kit. However the linkage does not match up with the floor shifter. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this without buying an after market shifter (like a B&M)? I want to keep the stock floor shifter if I can. Thanks |

I don't know, but I swapped out my FMX for a C4 on my last 69, and it worked fine.
Good choice on ditching the FMX.

On my 65 someone changed the tranny and the main problem was that the length of the shift lever on the tranny was to short so the shifter in the car never lined up with the numbers.
If that is what your prob is, changing the length of the linkage rods will not fix it. The only thing to do is to make sure the lever on the tranny is the same length as stock.

Oldschool - you are right. I checked the lever on my old FMX, which I still have and not only it longer, it has a 90 degree elbow.
I local Mustang place out here said I could swap out my floor shifter from another 71-73 Mach I that had a stock C6 in it. unfortunately, he did not have one, and neither did another local classic Mustang shop. The next best thing I could do was fashion a bracket that I bolted on to the C6 lever to extend it and it seamed to work. The two line up pretty good. I will probably need to tinker with the length a little. If I knew how, I would simply remove the lever from my FMX and put it on my C6, but they are not bolt on and it looks like you need to get into the tranny to do it. I will keep looking for a floor shifter from a 71-73 that had a C6. I have been told it my best best is one with a big block in it, since that is what Ford was mating with a C6 tranny. The small blocks ie 351 had the FMX. Thanks for the input. |
