conversion of 66 coupe to fastback or convertable
hey this is the question, i have come across a very nice, very affordable 1966 mustang coupe, and i was pondering, is it possible to turn this classic into a different model, either a convertable, or fastback. if this was at all possible could someone let me know how this would be done, what would be needed, cost, and if i am looking at this the wrong way.? please help i dont want to let this mustang get away.

I've heard of it but never seen it done. So don't get your hopes through the roof. Just do some searching online....... A lot of searching.

Anything can be done provided you have the skill, time and/or buget
realistically id it is a decent car, you are probably further ahead to buy that car, clean it up sell it make a couple of bucks and keep looking for the fastback/convertible that you want gtss |

If you want to make it into a fastback you basically need a fastback junker to take it from. You'd have to remove the sheetmetal bodies from both cars. I've been in a position to do this before but in the end it's way too much work. As gtss said I "cleaned it up sold it made a couple of bucks and kept looking for the fastback/convertible that I wanted."

You can't just cut the top off a coupe.
Convertables have special striffening steel under the body to compensate for no roof. If you are a real good welder and have the ability to fabricate metal it may be possible but I doubt it would be worth the cost. You should price the cost of the new frame and rag top.

On the verts the back side panels, side vent windows need to be changed and like oldschool said, the frame has to be stiffed up alot. You could do it, but why?

Why not, if you have the time, budget, skills, and equipment. Go for it, and post pick's of your progress here. There is a scarce few people doing major custom work anymore, and it will be a cool thing to see. That will definitely be a real Modded Mustang.

I think I will not do all of that work and spend all of that money just to get a fastback. If someone wants to do it and has the know how, I say go for it, but not many people do.

I wouldn't want a car that was permantly topless unless I drove in a lot of parades.
The retractable hard top is interesting. I cant say I like the look of the trunk lid though. Wonder if it leaks in the rain. Those cars are cool in a showroom but are they drivers? Think not.

it would take alot of work and exact mesurements, along with the know how to build the body up so it wouldn't twist if it was a convertable.
