Can someone help me out with backspacing?? please!! i need some help!

I have a 65 mustang that i want to throw a set of 17's on it, So i was thinking a 17x7 or 8 up front and a 17x i have no idea in the back!!!!! I have a ford explorer rear end on it, and it sits about a half inch wider in the back than the stock rear end. But i dont want my wheels to stick out i want them to sit inside or even flush with the fender. Can someone please tell me what back space i can use??? I NEED HELP!!! Im buying my rims as soon as i figure this out!!!!
