![]() If your 79 351 had the flex plate look at the weight and the tooth count 28oz = 157 tooth and 50 oz was 164 tooth count.. If there both the same as yours, it will be fine. what you have to watch out for is if you 1979 351 is a 50oz motor you will not be able to use the flex plate. I belive that the 50 oz motors started in 1980. but double check it just in case. I hope this helps. |

it didnt come with a flex plate at all. and the harmonic is a new one but i cant tell what size it is. and also the search i have done says its a 28oz till like 80 or 82. so if its a 28oz then my 289 stuff will work then right? i baught the motor as a new short block and the guy that had it built passed away so i dont know how it was set up so im taking a stab in the dark with 28oz.

You can go ahead and set it up as a 28oz. You should be safe. Even if it is a 50oz set up it will not hurt it to start and run it to see.
I belive it is a 28oz set up. and all your 289 stuff will work just fine. Good Luck. Let me know if I can help you anymore. |

I have a new set of 351 'swap' headers that I am not going to use. They are made for this application. They are shortys, and are ceramic coated. I sold the motor and am building a 302 instead, so I dont need these. Just let me know.

I need to get $250 for them. I paid $308, (have reciept), and that doesnt include shipping. Got em from jet hot coatings.
Did I mention that these were never even bolted up to heads?

The car had a 351 in it before, and ran GREAT! The car was sort of a beater, so I didnt really care about the rubbing going on against the shock towers. Yes, the 351 fits, but it WILL rub if you dont make more room. When I got the car painted, the engine bay got painted body color as well, so it looks just as nice as the outside. I couldnt spent that kind of $$ just to have the paint rubbed right off. So I figured a roller 302 with a charger on it will fit much better.
I dont think youll have a prob. with vibration. Itll rub, but you wont feel it while driving, I never did.EDIT; you have a 68, so you have more room between the shock towers, it might not rub. IDK.

yeah i think im a lil wider and i will be painting the engine bay later this year. i did the rest of the car myself too and was thinking of painting it the same as the outside. i like to do it in stages due to fundage and to make sure it all works before i lay paint on it. is yours cany red with a pearl white? i painted mine the base layer of a candy as with the darker stripes were a candy base. in the sun it will bring a tear to your eyes its so bright...lol! mission accomplished!

The whole car was sprayed in Orion silver, which is the base for the red, and the color of the stripes, then the stripes were masked off and then the car was sprayed red, which is House of Kolor candy apple red. Talk about bringing a tear to your eye, try $8500 bux for a paint job! And thats not even on the expensive side! Post pics of your car!!

At least you have a project to work on.
Just remember, under construction is always acceptable.

The 302 and 351W set is the same.
You just have to use the same set up for Crank and Water pump pullys. |

is the water pump for the 351w a lil taller than the 302? i mean where the pully bolts to it ..it seems as if the 351 is about an inch taller torwards the hood???? i got some pullys to fit the 4 bolt harmonic but then it hits the water pump pully. the water pump pully is from the 289.... i cant seem to find a smaller diamiter one with the same spacing that i need.

The Timing chain cover for a 289,302,351W are all the exact same. I use a Water Pump from a 1968 302 on my 351W. Passenger side water outlet.
The crank pulys and water pump pullys are match sets. you can not use 1 of each from different years. Some of the crank pullys are bigger and water pump pully is smaller, and the other way around. Also some are deeper than others so the belt will not line up. You can use this Harmonic balancer and use you old pully set up. ![]() Link to Summit for part This is a 3 or 4 bolt balancer. Or the really Crazy thing is you can use your old balancer and save the $79 bucks |
