There are toploader 3 speeds, 3 speed w/overdrives, close ratio 4 speeds, and wide ratio 4 speeds.

Ok, so what does that translate to in how they're different? The first one is three gears, the second is three gears and an overdrive gear (so technically 4 gears total), the third is 4 gears with an emphasis on acceleration through the gears, and the fourth is 4 gears with gears spaced out wider apart resulting less acceleration but higher top speed and lower rpm's at cruising speeds? How far off am I in my assumptions?

That's pretty close. The 3 speeds were an early transmission, and the overdrive tranny was a truck transmission. It had a "granny gear" for first, and when you went from 3rd to overdrive, it was almost like skipping a gear lol. They're junk and you don't want one.

You're correct on the close ratio being geared towards acceleration. The wide ratio is a little more street friendly, but gives no better cruising speed or anything like that, because the final drive ratio on all of them (accept the overdrive) is 1:1.

Yeah, I'd heard that about the truck version of the toploader and the final drive ratio. Just curious, is it possible to install the overdrive gear into a 4 speed close ration in place of it's final gear? That sounds like it would be the best of both world in terms of acceleration and highway cruising.

No, you can't convert an toploader to an overdrive because the output bearing on the O/D transmission is larger than the toploader transmission, so the cases and tailshafts are actually different. If you want O/D a T5 is your best bet.

Looks like I'll be looking for a close ratio top loader then.
