Changing a V8 to a V6

hey i have purchased a 67 coupe, nice car, i love it. best thing to drive, the problem is i found out i am driving it illegally. suppossedly i am driving a car to high powered for me, as i cannot drive anything 8 cylinders or more for another 2 and a half years, so i was thinking is it possible to replace a v8 it is a c code car with a 289 engine, and put a V6 in it temporally for the 2 years, and then change it back to V8 or even put a new like 351 engine in it, can anyone tell me if this is possible, where i would get this engine from, yeh i live in Australia that is why the laws are different. any help do i need to modify the engine bay or what????

I guess you could, but it would be costly. I would get a Harley and call it good.

+1... i think it's gonna be too much of a hassle to deal with switching them.. get a cheap car and just put the stang away.. its only 2 years...

i livein Australia, well i am really pissed about that, so what sort of price tag am i looking at for the conversion. like price of engine, mounts and a if i can do it my self. like i have seen other mustang 67s that have started with the six cylinder, at themoment it is 30 months until i willlegally be able to drive it and that is way to long, cause i plan to have it fully restored in 12 months.... can anyone offer another alternative to reduce thepower...

well they are in the middle of an election and new restrictions on p platers have come in as a knee jerk reaction of some stoopid kids in supped up cars got them selves killed. plus the penalty of driving one of these vehicles is a $470, vehicle confiscated and instant lose of license for 6 months and then have to start all over again.

That is a really wierd law.

Really it depends on the cost of the replacment motor and your skills, tools ect.

I have seen 6 banger and tranny combos sell for $250 because nobody wants them.
If you had both the only real complication is the motor mounts and tranny mount. The tranny shift linkage will have to be adjusted a little. If it is a manual trans you may need to adjust the clutch rod a bit as well.

If you have the skills I don't think it would be that hard. If you have to pay someone AND buy the motor then get a motorcycle. Spend the next 2 years doing a full resto and you will have an awesome car.

Exactly how does the law read? Does it really limit the number of cylinders or is there a horsepower limit? There are many ways to reduce the HP without swapping engines.

What ever yo do do not do the swap. Get something with a 4 banger, work on the stang over the next couple years ,sell the 4 banger and you will have one sweet ride. This is not the cheapest way to go but you will regerat not keeping your Mustang the way you want it . Is the insurance not a factor here.

you could put a 200 in there, or even a 300, if our lookin for power without the V8 title...alot of power is given out in the 300, or any 6 if you work it right
