Check/Set Timing

Can any one tell me how to check the timing on a '66 Mustang, 302? What would be the setting for "correct" timing?

You need a timing light. It would be kind of hard to explain to someone without showing them. There should be a mark on the timing chain cover, and there will be other marks on the balancer. Hook up the timing light, and put the clamp on the number 1 cylinder (front, passenger side) plug wire. Start the car, and aim the light at the balancer. Are there any mods? A cam can change what initail timing you would run.

not only that but your distributor also adds or takes away from the timing and getting into that is a bit more involved.

Yeah, that's why I just reffered to the intial timing. It gets to in depth, and it really shouldn't matter unless he's doing something different under the hood.

well this summer i will post a how to on the distributor. mine needs to be removed and reseated. whoever built the engine just dropped it in wherever so it still needs to be advanced a little but can't because it is already bumping against the thermostat housing.

It seems complicated, for someone like me who hasn't done it before. I read a couple of articles on the Internet about static and dynamic ignition timing. You're right; it would be easier to figure it out by watching someone do it.
