Rear Axle Swap

Howdy! I was wondering how hard it would be to swap a rear axle from a 2001 GT into a 1965 Mustang Convertible. Is it wort the effort? I'm not willing to pay the $$$ to upgrade to IRS (yet).

I would like the added benefits of the 8.8 rear axle that was stock mated to the 4.6 engine (which will be installed in the car as well). PLUS I want the disc brakes.

1) Are they the same length?
2) What's involved in the swap?
3) What benefits might I get from the swap?

Thanks for your help.

Ryan

You will have to cut off the coil spring perches and have leaf spring perches welded on it. I don't really know anything else about them.

Ok. Just to give a little more information.. I'm looking at a 2001 mustang that has been wrecked as a donor car for my 1965 convertible restomod. I plan on integrating almost every part possible from this gt car. The list includes...
Stock 4.6L 260 hp engine, ecu & modified exhaust.
5 speed transmission
Seats
cooling system
A/C
instrument cluster
disc brakes
brake & clutch petals
brake master cylinder
wheels from a 2008 gt
i'd like to go with a heigts or TCI front suspension setup
anyway, I'd like to keep the entire project around $10,000 By doing most of the work myself. We'll see.
Body panels $2000
GT donor car $3500
Front Suspension $2500

For me there is only one way to go here. It is not as hard as you would think. But the change to the old Mustangs ride and handling is so dramatic you will think you are driving a new Stang! With all the stuff is comes with is a savings over just buying rack & pinion, Disc brakes, front suspension, & Coil over shocks.

The kit comes with: $2495
-Frame reinforcing plates

- Steel inner fender panels

-Jig welded crossmember

-Upper a-arm and shock mounting tower

-Urethane bushed upper and lower tubular a-arms

-Kick ass Urethane bushed Motor mounts for a 289,302,351 or 4.6 & 5.4 Mod motor

-Total Cost Involved Custom IFS dropped spindles

- Bolt-on steering arms for correct turning radius and ackerman

-Standard Power rack & pinion

-TCI All American coilover shocks with adjustable spring tension and black powder coated springs

-Eleven inch vented smooth rotors

-Detailed instuctions showing how to remove old suspension and install the new TCI unit

Just look at all the room it gives you....

here is the 2003 IRS Cobra Rear end we installed.

WOW. Beautiful work.

Seriously, that is amazing. But I see that you installed IRS in your stang. What did you do to compensate for the extra 3" that you get from the Cobra IRS (5 inches if you use vintage mustang wheel spacing)? 1967 fits this IRS beautifully (as says DVS restorations), but 1965 is narrower and DVS says that it requires rear quarter flares.

Anyway, keep me posted on your project.

Thanks,
Ryan

Hey Ryan,

We used the New style wheels with this car from the Cobra.

Here is a side shot of this car. Link to all the photos
