mutha thumper in a 351w

anyone running these cams in their setup? i know they have their fans and people hat them like everything else out on the market but im looking for some tunning help. what i have is bored .030 over about 9.9 to 10.0 comp. ported heads 194/1.6 valves. running a mad pro that requires an ignition box useing the msd street fire box w/blaster 2 coil. edl 600 cfm. i believe the 95 jets. now i installed the blue springs in the carb and was wondering which jets to go with. 3600 feet here im Montana. the dist i used a silver stop bushing with light silver and blue springs. seems to be running alot smoother but not sure if its right. now the plugs are burning rich. i cant take it out yet due to snow and so im wondering if thats why. im using factory spec plugs @ .034 gap. now im wondering if i should gap it larger and or use a diff plug alltogether. i can smell the richness in the garage with door open. it does sting the eyes a lil...any sugestions? thx for anyones help...

A cammed engine is always going to make a little more fuel smell at idle, but 95 jets are HUGE!

10.0:1 compression is the bare minimum to make the mutha thump work because it has a ton of overlap, so it requires more compression than normal.

The blue spring is going to be too stiff. Try the long yellow one, although that has nothing to do with your problems now. A 600 CFM carb is going to be a little bit small for a 351. What kind of heads are they? Did you get any flow numbers when they were ported? I'd say you need a minimum of a 650, and possibly bigger. The good thing about a vacuum secondary carb, is that it's hard to over-carb one, because it supplies fuel based on engine demand, rather than your foot.

I'm not as familiar with the Edelbrock carbs, but the size of jets shouldn't affect the fuel smell at idle because it has a separate idle circuit. I think those jets are going to be too big

I have a 351W with big flowing Trick Flow heads, Weiand Stealth intake, and a bigger cam, and I have a 670 CFM carb, and it's too small. I have 67 jets in the primaries, and 74 jets in the secondaries at 1000' elevation.....granted,it's a Holley.

Actually, about the spring....I'm not sure about that now either because I was thinking Holley.....but it still has nothing to do with the smell at idle.

thx, the blue spring is supose to be the ligter of springs. i do plan on going with a holley but not at this time. so i was plannin on using what i have. the plugs look like a brown black. not physically wet but looks to be burning rich. the heads are from a 66 289 60cc milled down i think he said .030. 194 and 1.6 valves with the inside ov the valves hogged out for beter flow. im not sure on the jets now so ill have to tear it down and look. what do you recomend?

Well as I said, I'm not as familiar with the Edelbrock carbs. I know a lot of people have good luck with them, and swear by them for a driver car, but I've just never been able to get one to work for me. I guess it's all about what you're comfortable with. You're not going to be able to tell a whole lot until you're able to go drive it. If you know a little about reading plugs, you can jet it until you get a good color, and then start working with the springs. A rich smell at idle doesn't mean anything for what it will do going down the road.

As far as the secondary spring, if you can feel the secondaries engage, your spring is too light. You should never feel anything but a steady acceleration throughout the RPM range. So really, you'll have to do some driving and then see where you're at. I may be selling my 670 Holley Street Avenger if you're interested .

but really, all carbs are different and a lot of people can make those Edelbrocks work. My personal preference is a Holley.

i hear ya about holley. i had edel on my strocker once then went to a 750 holley and it was like twice the motor. im not going to put one on until i replace the fuel line with 1/2" and a new tank. because its all orig. but just tryin to get it running good till then. and if this snow ever stops i will go for a test ride. what ya asking for your strre? and why ya selling it? what ya asking?

I don't know. I'd have to look around see what used ones go for. It's not very old, and I really like it for it's driveability, and ease of tuning. It's the best carb I've ever used on a street car. I just put these heads on that have a big CNC port job on them, and they're flowing over 300 CFM per side, so I need something a little bigger. I think I'm going to stick with the street avengers and get a 770 CFM.

I use NGKs gapped at .035, but the TFS heads use a different plug.

I'm not too sure I understand the question. First off, do you know which MSD? Does it use a box, like a 6 or 6al? Does it have a vacuum pod on the front with a line going to it?

It's sooo hard to say. Timing is different in every engine. It's just something you have to mess with.
