RestoMod 67 Fastback.. Getting Started

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum and new to a lot of things regarding this project.

Several years ago, I put together a '66 coupe that I sold before moving from CA to FL. It was a lot of fun, and I want to do it again now bigger and better, and now with my son.

First off, over the last year I've done lots of research regarding the building of a '67 Fastback, and have gone over all the options. From buying a converted shell from a well known company, to the Dynacorn shell, etc. The route of the converted shell gives you a coupe VIN. A restored Fastback shell is pretty up there in price.. I've considered the Dynacorn shell because you can't beat brand new everything. But my issue is the VIN. State laws say that the shell is a "replacement part" but that's not really my problem. I want a fastback matching VIN. This is not for resale, or for any other reason that I want it that way. So I really do want to find an actual 67 Fastback donor.. But I just really care about the title! A clean one. I've scoured google left and right. How can I find an "unrestorable" car just for it's title to match it with the Dynacorn shell?? I'm in Miami, FL.. Does anyone have any resources of this type in which I can locate an unrestorable/destroyed/burned/mauled Fastback? I don't care if it's a front clip buried in the everglades, I just want title!

Welcome to MM Forums...

The Dynacorn Idea is a good one, But...

1. The car cost 16k plus shiping...
2. You have to buy everything for it, Hence the doner car with good VIN.

You looking at over 20K before you even start building your car.

If I was you, And I have done this 10 times now Buy a Good Car Like these to build your dream car from.

1. 1967 Fastback

2. 1967 Fastback

3. 1968 Fastback

4. 1967 Fastback

There is alot of good cars to buy with everything you need to build one. And not having to scrap a good car.

Here is a link to a few the I have done Link to my Cars, If I can help let me know.

I would just search craigslist and ebay. There might not be one there now but keep checking and overtime I am sure a good deal will pop up. If you arent in a hurry I would wait for the right donor. I have seen roller fastbacks all the time on craigslist. Some need floor pans some dont.

Agree with Mustang1. Better to save one from the crusher. There are still some solid, buildable cars out there. But you WILL get what you pay for. Most guys who are holding on to these cars know what they are worth, so it will take alot of shopping and patience on your part. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input! Mustang1, your cars are amazing!

Well I definitely have done a lot of research, and donor car research the last couple of days. First off, I know I will have to dedicate a lot of time to do this. I'm going to very slowly put this together. I'm looking at way over a year, maybe 2 with the extent I'm taking it.

Really, I've spent some time looking in to local laws, etc. More specifically about tagging the "replacement body" with the VIN of the purchased/destroyed fastback. I saw a fastback shell on Ebay that went for less than 3k... But the concept is still..pretty scary. It's all about "intent", etc. Also really, I'm building a car that doesn't exist. So why be so picky? (see below)

I've decided to go with a Drake's "Coupe-to-Fastback" conversion.

I also didn't really get in to what I was doing. I'm building an Eleanor-Like clone and dropping a 5.4 SVT motor in. I'm looking at the Control Freak rear IRS, Tremec 6 speed transmission.

To save time and moving the shell around, I was going to check with Drake's to see if they can put in the Mustang II set up with the engine mounts, as well as the rectangular cutout for the motor to fit. Also if they can do the Shelby Taillight panel.. I'd love just to ship that thing right to the paint shop and work the rest from my garage over time.

Custom headers will be required of course, and a mod to the oil pan, etc. The wiring is going to be LOTS OF FUN! SVT has all the goodies to make the motor (pcm,etc.). It's not a cheap project. The sound system I have in mind alone is intended to even make George Lucas cream in his pants.

This might sound a little dumb to ask, however is the drive shaft length going to be an issue?

Actually Mustang1, just saw another post of yours.. You would recommend the Cobra 4.6 32v mod motor instead? I see it's a HELL of a lot cheaper haha... The 5.4 looks like fun. I don't know. I do know I'm saving that for last in the project.. I was going to see how the pocketbook was doing at that point.

Good luck with getting this project together. I've always wanted a 67 Shelby so someday I might try and do a clone. Please keep us posted. Thanks.
