what 5 speed trans fits on a 289

Ive got a 67 mustang all original when it comes to the drive train. Here in the next few months I am going to rebuild the motor and paint the engine bay. I would like to put in a 5 speed trans that does not take a lot of modifications. Also is there any transmissions that will work with my drive shaft or with any option am i going to have to get a new one.

A T5 out of a V8 foxbody Mustang will work. Some people have been able to do the swap without shortening the DS. You really won't know until you get to that point. I'm building a 68 now that we're dropping a T5 into.

All you have to do is get a T-5 and use a adapter plate. and all the stuff you have already will work.

Just add this to your bell housing and done. Will have to slot the trans mount , and that is it.

T5 has no computer.

Thanks a lot man. I really appreciate your info. Do you sell that adapter?

Also what about a driveshaft?

Sometimes you need to shorten the driveshaft, sometimes you don't, just test fit when you're done. Average is 49.5" center to center on the u-joints, but not every car is exactly the same.

I used the T5 bellhousing and did not need the adapter plate.
My driveshaft only had .500 inches of freeplay. You should have .750 to 1.000 inches.
I decided to use an aluminum DS that was 51 inches center to center. Aluminum reduces vibration problems. Pictures and Info: Drive shaft
You want to get a world class T5. Here is info on how to ID a transmission if you are buying it: How to ID a T5
It is also recommended you change out the rear bushing and seal. It is also a good idea to change the aluminum bearing retainer to a steel retainer. Here is how to do it: BM Ripper Shifter and T5 upgrades | FordMuscle Magazine
I decided to use a 10 1/2 inch King Cobra diaphragm clutch instead of the old 3 finger style. I needed to get a new flywheel with 28 oz imbalance, 157 teeth ($125 Ebay) so it would mount.
I also put in a hydraulic clutch that works great. I did not want to deal with a cable clutch and heat issues. Cost was about $230. Info, parts list and pictures: Hydraulic clutch
More info on the change out: T5

5th gear is a little tall with my 3.00 rear end. I find I need to down shift to 4th to pass quickly on the freeway so I wont lug the engine. I just bought a 3.55 trac-lok 3rd member I will be installing in the next few weeks so that problem will go away soon.
Overall it is a great mod to do on a Mustang.

Good Luck and BE Safe
Ron
