66 vs 67?
OK guys, so I'm really thinking about purchasing a classic for a restro mod.
I've found two locally and want some opinions... '67 Coupe - $2000 rusted panels have been repaired/replaced, and the car is in primer now. no engine or transmission, was originally straight 6 car. Has the v6 suspension, but isn't currently on the car no interior in the car, but I believe he has it all, and he has recovered the seats. Hood is the one with the turn signals '66 Coupe - "$1,200" (He's a really nice guy, actually owns a shelby gt350, and restores mustangs as a hobby, he's getting old and trying to get rid of his projects now, and said he would definitely work with me on the price if I really wanted it. I'm thinking at least $1,000, maybe even $800) Has the straight 6 and 3-speed trans, but doesn't run. I think its locked up? body has some rust on the quarter panels, and has 2 large dents, so a lot of sheet metal would need replacing before primer and paint. Is in rolling condition, but of course the 6 cyl suspension, so that would be replaced anyway. Has interior, but It's seen better days. But its not beyond horrible. Definitely would replace it when I had the $ tho. I want some opinions on which stang would be a better deal? I would be doing all work myself, except paint. I have a shop to work in. I don't know how to weld yet, but I feel confidant that I can handle it. End plans, I would love to have an '03/'04 Mach 1 4.6L 4v engine, and Turbocharge it, ..... or..... an '03/'04 Cobra supercharged 4.6L 4v engine. I know the '67 would have more engine bay room, and have less work required on the body... but I'm drawn towards the '66 just because of the owner, and I feel he is much more trustworthy.

BTW, I would really really rather have a fastback... but considering the cost, and the condition most fastbacks are in, I'm thinking it may be better to just get a coupe, do the necessary body work, and before paint, see if I can obtain a fastback top, and cut the top off the coupe and weld the fastback in place.
Does that sound reasonable, or should I hold out, and start with a fastback?

yeah, that definitely higher than I was looking for. And I was wanting one as a project, not finished...
When you say ready for paint, does that include the drivetrain being complete, or just body?

Yeah... Fastbacks are almost a nothing more than a hopeless dream for the average guy anymore. If you gotta have that 'fastback' look you might be better off either looking at maybe getting a car that only came in that kind of body style. Or just go with a coupe and even look into finding a fastback roof to put on it (not much more likely than finding an affordable fastback I imagine)/

I personally like the 67 coupe the best looks the most aggressive out of the coups. I really hope that I get to complete mine in the next couple of years. Then I will start thinking about my next project maybe another stang for my son which should give me a good 15 years to complete.

when i was younger, I loved the 66, now that im older, thats to much chrome. I have a 67 coupe now slowly being rebuilt. Personally I think a 67 is much more aggresive look like said above. Just depends on what you like. a fast back, GT500, 69 boss or something like that would be great but we dont have that kind of money. Look to be spending alot of money in a good resto man. its not cheap or easy. You can also buy a fast back shell and have brand new body of a fast back but they are like 15k$. I think.
But I would go with a 67 for a muscle look. |
