385 series 460 engine in a 1969 Mustang.
Lemme start off by saying that I've always been a Honda guy, and I know little to nothing about anything else BUT Honda/Acura. Lol. But I'm trying something new, so bear with me for a while, as I'm sure stupid questions will arise.
My friend gave me two 460 engines. Both engines are good, supposedly, but I haven't looked at them yet. They're out of a couple of F250 trucks, but he wants to put a 7.3 diesel in those trucks, so he has no need for the 460 motors. I wanted to know what I could do with these if I did completely rebuild them. I did a little searching, and I found that there have been several people that have put them in a '69 Mustang. I was wondering how difficult this would be and if it's a popular build. Any specific mods that have to be done before I can drop the motor? |

Welcome to MM Forums...
With the heads the 460 has on them they will just fit. All you need is 1969 429 motor mounts. |

Awesome. So no mods whatsoever? What about a higher rise hood? This is great, though. I'm glad it takes little to no mods. Definitely a relief. Are there any build threads for a 460 in a 69 mustang on this board?

I did it in 1985 when I was 19. Maybe it is easier today, but back then it was a real pain in the ass. The '69/429 motor mounts that I had, moved the engine way forward in the bay. If the motor is not moved forward, you won't be able to get the starter to clear the steering rods. That puts the water pump right up against the radiator. Even using a Thunderbird/Thunderjet pump, which has a shorter snout, you won't have enough room to run a conventional fan. You need to use electric fans mounted to the front of the radiator. Even with the stock cast iron exhaust manifolds, they will be right up against your shock towers. You can still get the spark plugs out, but you have to use a socket with a hex on the back of it and reach down with an open end wrench to turn the socket. Then you have to come up with radiator hoses that will work. You'll have to sort through a pile of them to find something that will line up correctly with the motor and radiator. Then you have to make your own transmission mount, since it is moved forward as well. Then you have to get a drive shaft made.

the 460 in a 69 doesn't sound like something I want to tackle at the moment. I do want to build a 69 mustang though. I read that there were 7 different engines offered in the 69 mustang. Which of these engines would offers the most power but isn't hard to find?

Nevermind. Found an amazing spec site for the 69. If anyone else wants to give it a look, I posted the link at the bottom.
According to the spec site, the 429 has the most power with 375hp. According to another site, though, Ford only made just over 1300 of th mustangs with the 429s in them, which seems like it would make it difficult for me to find one. However, I haven't read anything about the 428, which according to the site had the second most power with 335hp (Before being bored and fitted with newer high compression pistons, of course). How easy would it be for me to find a 428? And what transmissions can be used? I want a manual. 3spd or 4spd? 1969 Mustang |

I was thing we were using a 460 it was close to free...
Now if you are Looking to spend the kind of money it would take to buy a 428, 6k to 10k Now we are in a total different ball park. I would go with the New 351W Stroker motors, They are a lot cheaper and better than the old FE for the price. Here is were you can get a great motor for low cost. You can get a 424 stroker motor for $2395. pawinc.com |
