Another 69.I'm not the only one.for what you said just stay with what you got.couldn't realty tell if it was a Cleveland or 351m from the pics.if its a 351m,just build a 400 with a set of 4v heads with a decent cam and you will be good.personally I'd go Cleveland.that's what I've always ran and will always run.best bang for the Buck I think.my Cleveland. Ran some 10.30 with the stock 4v heads.pump gas(87 octane) on the street.it would run some 11.70 or so on motor and the 10.30 on bottle.its been togather for 8,9,10 years.I don't remember.there cheap and easy with the right cam.the can is the key.it took 4 company's till one new what they were doing

Yea i was told it was all replaced, none of the work looks well done. Im going to tear it down and do it all myself. I know next to nothing about it. But Im an engineer and im picky about stuff LOL. So Im sure I will get it done.

I have a neighbor who has a running early 80s 302 he will haul to my house and give me for 50 bucks. With all the tin on it. He just needs it out of his garage. its out of his old truck he thinks its an 84. It runs and smokes.. but 50 bucks is the right price LOL.

So if I build a 302? Am I going to be losing a whole lot over a 351C or Windsor in reality if im not racing it?

I want to burn the tires at will and have is sound mean .. so when I step on the gas my ricer buddies know its a V8.. is the 302 not what I want?

Ive heard the 351M is a crap engine good for hauling wood ... thats about it without some serious work.

Should I look for a 351C or W and just do that since that seems to be the popular route?

I'm really at an impasse now. i found a 429 but I have hear thats a headache and a ton of work. So id rather not go that route. Though as many of you know.. this is my dream car and I love it .. running or parked LOL. I want it to be insanely fun to drive and powerful. When I step on it. I want it to waste my BMW or my buddies WRX for that matter.

I understand with enough money anything can happen. Im actually kind of excited to build up my own engine. Ive done very little of that in the past on a stroker for my jeep Cherokee.

Lets just say average mans budget and little knowledge. How should I go about it and what engine should I go after. I have a 351 Cobra jet in my area too but its tore apart and the guy wants 1400 for it. the 302 Boss is a full block with the tin and no heads for 300 bucks. Its out of a 71 or 70 mustang.. cant remember what the guy said.

Those aside I can get one of about anything reasonable around here.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions! I guess Ill pull this engine and make 100 bucks. Its a shame it runs perfectly LOL but its not what I want.. I wanna stand on it like the movies and burn the tires and all that good fun.

I believe they both have 8.. actually. 6 is on a Windsor.

SO now that I know i Have a modified and my transmission is shot..

My next question is..

What do I go after..

Available to me now is a 302 BOSS without heads.. which are insane expensive on ebay anyways.

a 351C with cobrajet heads and intake and 2 holly 650s.. which is probably too much for what i want... and it looks like a Ton of work.

a 1997 351W out of a truck a guy is parting out

What engines do I want? and what transmission? Its an automatic. Is the AOD or a C6 what im looking for?

I want to race my friends on the drag strip here in town.. but.. i want to drive it and cruise around too.. so a fast street car.. essentially.

I think Im going to go with a standard 302 and build it in the garage while I tear this thing down to do brakes and steering and whatever else. I assume thats about my cheapest option for horsepower and ease of work as I'm not a mechanic.. yet LOL.

I'd cast my vote to the Cleveland after looking over what you said you want out of this car. A cleveland (4v) will probably be the easiest/most cost effective way of making your car one that will blow the doors off your buddies cars at the track yet still be streetable. A 351 windsor will work for this as well, but will require more go fast parts and consequently money to achieve the same (though even with aftermarket heads this engine would be more civil on the street compared to the cleveland 4v with its massive port stock heads (which is why its so great for the race aspect)). And the 302 (essentially a destroked 351W) would require even more money and go fast parts to achieve the same results as the 351 W or C.

In my opinion I think you should bypass the boss 302 idea (true boss 302 heads for it are expensive and the performance on the street is disappointing I hear), talk to the guy with the 351 C Cobra Jet and talk him down on the price if you can and make sure everything is there (after assembly and with some new parts thrown in it would be one hell of an engine I think), and take strong consideration of the 351 W you have available to you but first locate a transmission for it (if you don't plan on using the one behind your 351M) and come up with your idea at to what your going to do with it to make it more than just a truck engine.

Well I love the Cleveland Legacy though I thought parts were expensive I really don't know. Any way I do it. It will be expensive. I have a gy with a running. Not perfectly but a decent running 351C. I can get that fairly cheap. Now how much work it it to swap a manual transmission in place of the auto? Or should I just stuck with the auto and get an AOD? I love driving 5 speeds but a good auto will do fine if its set up correctly. It currently has a C6 thats slipping. So I will replace that as well.

There is also an affordable running 428 ford locally as well. Or is that worthless? Ive heard they're a bitch to work on and you have to pull the engine just to swap plugs on them among other issues? Just another idea.
