351W How to: crank bolt removal/and other
I originally started this resto project to fix my overheating 351W (1969 mustang 2dr coupe), and now i have most of the engine apart. I am trying to close all the doors on possible overheating causes. I am down to the heads and im trying to remove the timing chain cover. I want to ensure that there is no rust clogs in the block. I discovered a rusty paste substance in the passenger side head inside the port closest to the firewall (small bits of metal in the paste) This paste is probably because the car sat for 5 years and that is where the radiator fluid settled, tho i am not sure as the other 3 main ports are clean. What else could this be??
How do i stop the crank from moving/turning the engine over when i try to loosen the 1" crank bolt?? is there a special tool i could rent?? I have tried the 20" breaker bar and am wondering if it is worth the cost to get a heavyduty impac wrench or if that will even work. I will not use the cranking the starter method. Everything from the heater core to the radiator will be new. |

I have always used an impact.... but you can also get a piston stop and it will hold the engine in place and will allow you to loosen the crank bolt. to pull your heads you dont need the timing cover off, but if you wanna put a new chain on( I would) then you would.

It's a 15/16" bolt. I have a $50 electric impact gun that I use to break the bolt loose.

thanks for the info on the size of the bolt, i was using a 1"socket and it was ok, yes im aware that the timing cover doesnt need to be off to remove the heads, but since i have the engine tore apart i might as well be through and replace the timing chain too, the timing chain cover is blocking my view of the engine block ports. I want to see if anything may be blocking those engine ports.
