351C start-up Help needed

I have a rebuilt 351C 2v with an Edelbrock Performer Intake and 1406 carb. There are good sparks coming through to the spark plugs. When I try to start the car, it turns and almost starts to run, but just doesn't quite make it. Occasionally it will backfire and blow through the top of the carb.

Any advice? We re-timed the engine but using a straw in piston 1 and then rotating until top dead. Then, to get the distributor seated, we turned the engine until the distributor would sit. We adjusted slightly for the amount of rotation that was caused when the gears fully set.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it's possibly a timing issue. Have you checked and rechecked the firing order?

We checked the timing and we are getting it to almost kick into running. We replaced the starter and retimed, but each time it gets close to firing but does not. I will try to post a video of what it is doing, maybe that will help.

Thanks,
