Engine questions

Hello Ya'll,

Iam new to the mustang world, and bought a very nice 1967 289 Mustang Convertible, and the PO transplanted a new 302 into the car. The Car sat for 10 years, and all we did was drain the fluids, and it drives well but needs some TLC.

Here is what the PO can remember:
1970+ grenada. Not sure about the rear end.
Earson racing cam (~600 lift and ~300 duration…no stall convertor),
edlebrock intake manifold,
600 cfm nickel plated edelbrock 4 B carb,
roller tip rocker arms,
double coil valve springs

So my question is - what can I do about this hot cam? The car shakes likes a hot rod when Iam at lights, The stall converter will be a non issue soon, due to the T5 Iam dropping in.

My goal is just a nice driver with just enough power to have a little fun.

Thanks -Mark

What kind of heads are on it, and which Edelbrock intake? That cam is big, but with the right combo, it could be ok. Do you have the cam card?

I questioned the PO, but he did not document things very well. From what he told me, they are the factory heads, and the intake says "Edelbrock 289" on it.

The Carb is a joke right now - all gummed up, so I picked up a rebuild kit, and see if I can get it working correctly.

Probably just an Edeldbrock Performer series intake. Decent street intake, but someone else will have to fill you in on how it will work with that cam though (everything else is par for that intake).

If the cam is as big as you say, and it has stock heads and a performer intake, it is so over cammed, it can't be any fun to drive. With that combo, and no converter, I would imagine it's pretty gutless at low RPMs. Without a cam card, it would be very hard (and expensive) to build a combo around it. Best bet is to buy a better suited cam for your setup.

Whenever you change a Cam you need balance on the intake and exhaust as well. So if you have that cam with an upgraded intake and carb you prob need to open up your exhaust with headers or larger pipes. If your running more lift on the exhaust ports with stock exhaust it could sound pretty bad. (other than the obvious of going with a smaller cam) I hope that helps.

Yep - you nailed it! The project has snow balled a little, now Iam just looking into dropping in a T5 with a mild crate engine.
