66 mustang coupe
I've got a 66 Mustang Coupe. Had it since I was 11. Me and my dad restored it once to the best of our ability at the time. The car has power assist, and the steering has alot of play and the power steering pump lines always end up leaking. Anyways my question is I was thinking bout doing away with the power assist and replacing everything under there. its got the original 289 in it now. Was thinking bout either turning it to a fuel injected 289 or getting a 302 and making it fuel injected. Would like to be able to make this car a daily driver again. Any ideas. Thanks guys. And i don't have alot of money. so its kinda a poor mans budget, but if its something that i would be better off getting or something i really need then I will get it. Thanks again guys.

Well the thing is, I don't think anyone particularly knows what it is your asking (myself included). You start to say 'my question is...' but you never really ask anything, it just kind of ends on another statement. So I personally am not really sure how or what to reply to. Usually the folks in this section respond pretty quickly here.

Sorry guys...I guess my questions are what kind of front end would yall recommend that would also come with a steering column too...and what would be my best route to either make the 289 fuel injected or get a 302 and make it fuel injection...and what would be a good fuel injection system to buy....sorry I didn't make since before...I hope I made alittle more since now.

I priced out EFI for my 67 and it cost about $1100 or you need to find a donor car with all the computer stuff and harnesses. Unless your making it into an insane restomod I wouldn't waste your time or money. If you want a nice upgrade convert to a T5 or AOD. Doesn't cost much (other than the trannies) and makes your car shift and ride a lot newer.

On the front end, For a budget car I would go with a manual set up.
I have a few cars with the manual steering and like it a lot. You just need a drag link and tie rod ends. |

I bought parts from just about all the major dealers without problems. Check the availability of the part to be sure it is not back ordered.
I like the manual steering on the 66. It gives a good feel of the road. Projects depend on your ambition and how deep your pockets are with these cars. I have heard people getting 20-30k into them before they knew it. Mine is a Father-Son restoration for my sons first car. The deal was he had to put 1/2 of the money and time into with me. We are into the 66 for about 9k. We did everything ourselves including the body work and paint and it took about 2 1/2 years working every weekend on it. Check out out our build on the website I put together to document all of our "fun". Good Luck and BE Safe Ron
