turn signal/brake light problem

I purchased a 65 Mustang recently that had electrical problems. My current issue is the turn signal not working. When I turn on the lights the auxillary brake lights come on fine. When I step on the brakes both lights come on bright. When I turn on the turn signal to either side with the brakes on, the bright light goes out (auxillary light stays on). The blinker does not blink either during any of this. My initial thought was that the blinker relay was out. I purchased a new one and that did not fix the problem. Now I am lost as to where the problem is. PLEASE HELP!!

Welcome to MM Forums...

can you turn the signal on and work at anytime?

The Auxiliary brake light? do you mean the park light lights?

Blinkers do not work at all.

No, the blinkers do not work at all. The only way I know there is some sort of connection to the back lights is by applying the brake lights and then turning on the turn signal. By doing that it turns off the bright brake light with the blinker to that side on. This is what caused me to replace the turn signal relay/fuse.

problem fixed

after many hours tracing wires I finally figured out the problem. I have to order a new turn signal switch, the old one went bad caused by a short in the left front turn signal light. The spring holding the ground wire in the light was making contact with the other wires and causing a short. What a pain!
