What is the Best Exhaust fo my application?
i've been looking and reading up on different exhaust systems, i was looking at the flowmaster american thunder kit, the 15819 exhaust kit, borla mufflers, cherry bombs, etc... im thinking about a full exhaust kit and i would like to know the loudest and and the one that gives the most power. now i'm also thinking about making a custom exhaust, and i was wondering what i would need, (i read H-pipe has a better sound and X-pipe gives better power) idk what to choose, what are your experience with either, and mufflers that you like. i have a pretty much stock 70' 302 with a ford racing high performance manifold and edelbrock 600 cfm performer series carb, and flowtech headers, but everything else is stock. eventually themotor will get build and i dont want to need a new system once it gets done, because i dont know how soon it will happen. i really trust everyone on this site, you all seem to know so much, so i would like to know your opinions and suggestions, or any other kits you like.
Thanks, joe

Well you need to decide how 'built' this motor will be before you get an exhaust for this supposed future performance engine. Because you could slap on it the most unrestricted exhaust out there, but if you only do a very mild build on the engine all that extra exhaust flow will be a waste and not help you make any more power. Like wise you don't want to have an exhaust set up that flows only a little more than stock, and then drop a full purpose race engine in their. See what I'm getting at?
But to answer the real question at hand; I like Flowmaster 40's. They give a great throaty muscle car tone, and they don't sound raspy. Their flow is decent, though I don't know how they stack up against others.

The hp difference is negligible between h and x.... A couple more with x but not 20...h has a deeper growl where x is a higher snappy pitch.... I prefer h due to that deep bass sound.... And if you are re doing it front to back from what I have read Bassani has the best gains on paper.... long tube headers are a must...and my friend has a Mac exhaust with long tubes and an h pipe and it is the best sounding exhaust I ever heard... Whatever you do I hope you get out on the road and enjoy it

Back in the day my 66 with a mild 289 and a c4 ran 2 1/2" pipes straight back from the headers into REAL corvair turbo mufflers that dumped right in front of the rearend. Car sounded SWEET, it was an easy diy install and really helped the breathing of the engine. I've found on the smallblock fords that a good free flowing exhaust will probably be the most noticeable performance improvement for seat of the pants feel. ymmv.

I agree with the flowmaster 40s, they really give it a nice tone. I have heard a few 289s and one or two 302s with these flowmasters and I get excited every time I hear that deep aggressive untamed growl when you start it up that seems a little bit throatier than most other mufflers on these older engines.
And as for X vs. H...I would go for the H. There not really much of a difference performance or sound wise. As everyone already said, the H sounds a little deeper but its not something extremely noticeable. |

well to start off i appreciate the input, and i like the 40's and i looked at the 10s but i hear theyre not made for street use, and as for the motor, it really depends on the money i have at the time. so i'm thinking 2.5inch H pipe with the flowmaster 40s, aside from tips i need like a downtube or something (idk too much about exhausts haha)? and all so does the brand of pipe make a difference?
thanks

Add a set of long tube headers, and that's plenty of exhaust for your current set up (but still leaving you with room to grow in the future). On the down tube you mentioned, I think what you're thinking of is the down pipe which are on turbo'ed vehicles (could be wrong here so someone jump in here and correct me).
