Not all 351 Windsor heads were created equal. We've all heard of the common mod of mounting 351 heads on a 302 block and expecting better performance. Well I thought so too, I mean bigger is better right? Not exactly. There were two different 351 heads, here are the specs:

69-77 The Good Ones

Combustion Chamber - 60.4
Intake - 1.84
Exhaust - 1.54

78-80 The Not So Good Ones (Same as the 77-87 302 heads)

Combustion Chamber - 69.0
Intake - 1.78
Exhaust - 1.45

So if you get the latter ones all you are doing is creating more work for yourself since you will need special bolts to bolt them down with as the 351 heads used bigger bolts. Just trying to help.

Nooooooooo.... these are same as the 302 heads and worse than your old ones.

Please don't, punt on them, they are just your 302 heads but require special bolts to mount up to the 302 block.

Man I am not being a jerk, I love this thread and I want to see you succeed, but you got screwed on the heads. So if you need heads look for some GT40P heads from a Ford Explorer.

I thought the "Good" heads were only 69-70? You aaare correct about the head bolts, they run $35 more than regular 302 head bolts. When I picked them up, he had 3 other sets of 351W heads. Im thinkin i'll swap these 78s for a different set, now knowing the situation at hand. What're the specs on those gt40Ps?
Thanks Gregski

Nice progress!!!

Im doing the exact swap to my 67! use to be a 6 cyl and i just picked up a 302 last weekend!

Have a few questions! Where did you get your motor mounts from? And are they just bolted in or welded?

And any advice you can give me?

The motor mounts are bolt on. I got the mounts used for $100 from a classic mustang shop and the rubber part of the mounts from mustangone for $36. You will ATlEAST need to put a 1"-1 1/8" sway bar and V8 coil springs on the front, get a V8 radiator, V8 Z bar for the clutch linkage and V8 throttle linkage. I plan on using the 3spd for now, so I got a 289 bell housing and clutch and it'll bolt up to a SBF.

More parts *Pics*

Here's the bell housing after I cleaned it up - $125

The clutch kit - $100

This is the dizzy that came outta the boat, I'm gonna slap a new cap n rotor on it and see if it works. The points still look good

Here's the 5 blade flex fan (still dirty) The new rubber mounts ($32) and the Z bar ($45)

The clutch release arm and boot - $73

The clutch release spring - $10

These are the valve covers I bought from Mike - $40

Edelbrock 1405 - $100 used

I noticed there's not a bracket for the manual choke on this carb. Where would I find one? Or will I have to convert to electric?

So that's kinda like putting Iridium points in your dizzy? Assuming that were possible.

And yes, I noticed my thread slipping down the 1st page so I decided to take some pics today haha. I'm still just waiting on this damn machine shop. I believe the cylinders are bored and sleeved. No status updates on the heads, I don't even know if they'll be usable yet: therefore I can't order the master engine rebuild kit just yet. I plan on cleaning up the oil pan and 5 blade fan next. You bet yer ass there'll be pics up as soon as I do.

UPDATE 5-12-11

Today the machine shop called and confirmed the C9OEs will work with a valve job. So I called Mabbco in Tyler, Tx and ordered this engine kit for $312 w/tax & shipping. Ford 302 5.0 Master Engine Rebuild Kit 1968-1982 2pc. | eBay
The kit should arrive on wednesday.
Hopefully the flat top pistons will get me closer to 9:1 compression.
I was told the block should be done by the middle of next week.

It'll be a custom ground, stock cam. I can't remember what brand it is and the ebay description is not very descriptive.
So now I just need to order an edelbrock carb spacer, electric choke conversion, throttle linkage, a correct 67 water pump, and a few return/assist springs. I'm also considering replacing every engine bolt with some ARPs. Also, once the heada are installed i'll need to measure what push rod length i'll need and order those. Thats about it... I'm gettin pretty excited

Convert to electric choke. Manual is a PITA. While trying to warm up the engine.

It's been an eventful work vacation, I went to south padre for a week and then stayed at the lake for another 3 days. The remaining 4 days were just recovering

Though I did call the machine shop today; they claim to have it finished by the end of the week. It's about damn time

And yes, I did see Hangover II. It's the same movie just more epic.. and Stew gets banged by a tranny
