Play in steering

Hey guys, my dad a 1967 mercury cougar with a 289 and power steering, he recently acquired a 1971 mustang with a 351 also with power steering. One thing we noticed is alot of play in the steering wheel while driving. we were both wondering is there a way to fix this or a particular part that could be causing this? The cars are still drivable 100% but it would just be nice to have a tighter feel and more confidence while driving it. Thanks

There is a few thing that can cause this,

Tie rod ends inner & outer.

Steering box could need to be rebuilt.

The rag joint need to be replaced.

You should replace the rag joint regardless of what all else you want to do to it. It's 40 years old and a safety liability if not replaced. Then just get the tie rod ends and if its still loose you'll know the steering box will need rebuilt, but you'll have peace of mind knowing you replaced the more affordable and likely to fail parts already.
