I don't have anything against turbos, in fact they sound like a great idea for a 302. I don't know why, but when you asked that question, I felt like you asked me if you should kiss your sister. I guess there is just something so vintage about a 289, it seems un-natural to use a power adder on it. Maybe you could build a 302 to turbo and swap them out, leave the 289 un-molested? That is just my $0.02

True and thanks for the opinion I just figure adding a turbo to a 289 hipo would be nice.

The thing I was wondering is were you would put the the two turbos at?

I think the shock towers are in the way to plumb it to the cooler.

Then were do you put the cooler?

You could add a paxton supercharger a lot easier.

What is the estimated cost of adding a supercharger? Im guessing around 4,000. Wait I scrolled down lol dang thats expensive.

Depends on your goal. I wouldn't do it if you're looking for only 400 hp. It's stupid fun and will never do any other form again. One of my cars just made 850rwhp on 91, and you can't tell it makes anything close to that. It's a stock engine and cam, and quiet as hell.

Funny I got an email today because I hadn't been here in a while, and this is at the top lol.

Well to tell you the truth it's a little pricey for me to do that right now so I think im going to wait on doing any of that but it sure would be nice to have.

I've almost got my car back together, and I've been fighting budget constraints the whole way. If I had it to do all over again, I would buy a cheap, used motor that would slide in just to get it drivable, then start building a really nice motor on the bench as the money came along. When I finally got it finished, I would swap them. Looks like you have a running 289, so maybe you should start browsing craigslist for a good deal on a block (302 or 351), then start building a motor to swap in.

+1, build an 'extra' motor and enjoy the car now.

If you think that supercharger is expensive you will be looking at that and probably more to do a turbo system. At least a quality one. Turbocharging a car is normally much more expensive than supercharging one.

You could just get some aftermarket heads, intake, cam, and etc. for half the cost and get some decent power that way.

Sounds good to me.

Another issue is that I dont know much when it comes to working on cars .. what is the easiest way to learning all about the engines? I know hands on is the best way but what other options do I have and how will I know what kind of cam to get and things like that?

Local community colleges often have classes for engine or general auto repair. If there are any juco's in your area you might want to check in with them and see what they offer.

Never took any classes and have used Haynes manuals to tear down a 97 4.6 motor.... and it even ran when I put it back together with the new and improved parts :O .... then I used a haynes manual to tear down a friends little import 2006 dealy-eo and replace his heads/intake gaskets... that was a freaking three day nightmare, but as far as I know its still running.... hehe.

Make friends with a decent mechanic, someone who can come and help when you get to the sticky parts that even after all the reading/pictures your still beating your head with a monkey wrench. AND before you start make sure you have the tools you need, nothing sucks more than being in garage at midnight, your about to finish the damn thing and suddenly you realize your missing a tool and have to wait till the next freaking day to go buy it.... never happened to me... I swear..... Seriously though, good tools are worth every penny, if you don't have a good set, invest.

I had friend explain cams the best, "Cams are like voodoo, either you get it and believe or you just have to take somebodies word for it"... call an experienced shop, explain your build and what you want and get their recommendations, can't go wrong :-D, by all means ask questions and learn why they recommended those cams/heads/intake (they are all synonymous and you should select them all to work together), but utilize the professionals when making your engine setup selections.
