351W & M questions
I have found a ton of information while searching the internet, however I am cautious about what I read. I was given a 351W and told the mustang I bought has a 351 Modified. What is the difference between these engines? I want to turn one of them into an awesome daily driver and have plenty of power to burn the strip at the speedway every once in a while. How do I tell if they are original or aftermarket blocks? What is the most I could stroke it to? What is the best heads to slap on? What is be the idea manual transmission for this setup? What information or pictures would you need to help answer my questions? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I forgot, they appear to be 1969-1974 351's. I would like to convert the one I'll use to EFI. Any suggestions to that too? Details please.

First, if your 67 mustang has 351m it is definitly not the stock engine (in fact any 351 in a 67 is not stock). 351m is a big block engine found mostly on trucks and vans. The 351w is a small block motor based off the same technology as the 289 and 302. In fact pretty much all performance parts except intake and distributors will fit all 3 motors. Given how much more stuff is available for the Windsor, you will probably find that it is going to be the easiest motor for you to work with.

"The most popular stroker for the 351W is the 393. Perfectly suited for a variety of uses from street to pure track excitement, the 393 is a great combination for any Ford car or truck. If having an easy-going high horsepower engine is something you would like to achieve, the 393 is perfect for you." I ripped that off from here, LOL
FordStrokers.com 331-347-408-418-427 Custom Built Small Block Ford Engines - Ford Stroker Kits :: Coast High Performance Rotating Assemblies :: 351 Windsor Stroker Kits The 351cid V-8 was introduced in 1969, and was available with 250 or 290 hp. (from Wiki, lol) |

Gregski lives!!! Glad to see you again man.
While The 393 is very popular, and I in fact considered it strongly for my build. My machinist highly recommend the 408 over the 393 due to the longer rod, which gives it a higher dwell time at TDC, which allows for higher compressions on lower octane fuels. This is all based on verbal information from the machinist, I did not go through any effort to verify this. |

The 408 is a very popular build because it fits into the block very easily with the right parts. My Scat rotating assembly went right in with only a little grinding on the oil pump and the block where the oil pump mounts...Getting back to the original question the 351M and 351W are very different engines..The M is basically a taller deck cleveland motor..The motor was an absolute dog in stock form but they do have great potential with aftermarket parts..The problem is they were never installed in mustangs so motor mounts and headers would be very tough and expensive to get..Most of them also have a big block bellhousing pattern which narrows your transmission selection as well....The windsor is by far the easier engine to build and install in your mustang...

351M is just a destroked 400, which is part of the Cleveland family (335-series). Cleveland heads interchange, and would be the first step towards building that motor if that's what you choose to do.
That being said, Windsor parts are much more prevalent, and there's a lot more knowledge out there on building one.
