Question

Best crate engine?

Hey guys I'm new to this form but not new to mustangs and I need some help. I want to build a daily driver that still has enough power to keep things interesting. My idea was to buy a I6 with a clean body and swap a V8 in. My question to you gentlemen is what engine to going to give me the least trouble going into a 65-70 coupe? (depending on what I can find). I am also open to buying a old engine and rebuilding/ tanking/ magnafluxing ect. ect. Depending on what is cheaper since I am on a tight budget. I would prefer a 289 or a 302 but I don't know much specifics like what models have 4v and what have 2v and so forth. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
sin.

Hmm,

I would by a 1967/68 Coupe. They will give you the most options for the money.

I would Buy a V8 car with out a motor If you have a low budget. The reason I say a V8 car is the it will have the V8 suspension it it. There is a big diffirence between a I6 & V8 suspension. and all the items you will need to make it in to a V8 car. I have 12 1965 to 1970 Coupe in Tulsa Ok. for sale as low as $500 to high of $1500.c Some with motors.

What kind of budget and time frame are we working with? So I can answer the engine part.

Yeah I'm not really picky about what year as long as its rust free and well taken care of. If I had to pick 69's are probably my favorite...something about the 4 headlights. well I basically have as much time as I need cause I'm not going anywhere, just working, saving up money and going to school. As for budget I would like to keep the entire build to under 10k if possible but I expect it will end up a little higher than that cause I have pretty high standards when it comes to drivability and appearance. Can you send me some pictures or tell me about what you have for sale that might be in that ball park?

Were are you located at?

10K If you do all of the work and Paint you could make it. You will not be able to buy many new parts though.

Here is a 1969 I have for 6K, I will look for more photos. You can see a couple behind

There is few more looking this way.

well like I said I might have to stretch it out to 15k or so because I do have a sweet tooth for new parts.depending on how much I work this summer will decide how far over 10k I can afford to go. I am located in sunny rust free California, not too far from where Gregski is located from what I read..not to sound creepy. That 69 looks pretty sweet, dirty but sweet. All it needs now is some mags and a grabber orange paint job . Does it come with an engine?

Just so you know, the v in these 2v and 4v engines dies not mean valves like todays modulars. The v stands for venturi.

o snap now I really feel like a noob. I forgot they only made a 2 valve engine. venturi refers to the number of barrels in the carb.

correct. they had different intakes and head for a 2bbl or 4bbl carb. but since you said you want to add a little more power, i would imagine you would be getting a set of aftermarket heads so that would be irrelevant

well since I am doing a build on a budget if the stock heads are in good condition I will keep them to start but if they are f'ed up I'll upgrade to something better. From what I hear AFR makes some killer heads for that engine but I have always been interested in a clevor swap. Do you happen to know what would be cheaper and/or what set up would make more power?

It is a 2 barrel carb car. It needs the floor pans, I dont see rust in the body. It has not ran since 1983 so im sure you have to do a few thing to make it run again.

Here is a link to all the photos of it. 1969 Mustang Fastback

well that certainly looks like it needs a good restoration and I'd love to be the guy to do it the price just seems a little stiff considering it needs paint and new interior and a engine rebuild and floor pans. Everything just adds up to be out of my price range. I am looking to find a starting point around 2-4k, I have seen complete running cars for 6k

They are very rare and to have one just sitting in that car that was in a barn would be about 1 in a million

Yes, Yes you are.

They made 3 million coupes from 1964 to 1970.

They made 250,000 Fastbacks in the same time frame.

And this one is a rare barn find that is complete all number matching.

well I mean I knew fastbacks were worth about twice is much in the earlier years like 65-68 but I always thought when the switched to the sports roof they weren't as collectible for some reason. Either way I really want that car. I was thinking about renting a trailer and driving out from California this summer. Do you think you will still have the car for sale then?
