66 Coupe V8 swap

Hey everyone! I'm new to the classics so this maybe be a real noob question. But I may be selling my 2000 GT Convertible to get a nicer truck and then I found a 1966 Coupe with a V6 auto that is going cheap and I would want to put a V8 and a 5spd in it. How hard is this to do? I know things will have to be changed but its a 66 its gonna need work haha

I know I would have to upgrade the suspension, breakes, and get now motor and probably tranny mounts as well as a new drive shaft and rearend but if you guys can go more in depth on what needs to be done it would be greatly appreciated!

First of all ford didn't make a v6 in the 60's it was a straight or inline 6 so lets get that out of the way. You will need to upgrade the suspension for sure and probably want to swap to 5 lug disc breaks because a V8 is going to be a lot heavier and going a lot faster so you're going to want more stopping power. Depending on what motor you are planning to swap in you will want either an 8in or 9in rear end. You will also need new motor mounts. you might be able to keep the same tranny for the time being if it is a manual 3-speed but I would recommend upgrading to a 4 or 5 speed eventually. If you havent already purchased the car you will save a lot of money just buying a factory V8 car with no motor or one that needs a rebuild because it will already have most of these parts

I new I would say V6 with out meaning to haha I knew it was an I6 just am to used to saying V6 haha I would want at least a 302 and a 5 speed but the only reason I would start with a factory I6 is I found one cheap and it still funs and the body is not nearly as bad as most in NY

The first main thing you will need is Motor mounts Frame mounts, Radiator, Accel Linkage. Then you will have to looks at replacing the rear end and front steering.

Thanks for all the help! From what it seems you are the one to talk to for sure! I was reading the stickies and could I use a lot of the suspension from a SN95? The guy who swapped the bodies out and was curious about that. I could use the rear-end out of one right?

Yes you can. It all depends on your abilities of making things work.

We installed a IRS from a 2003 Cobra and it was not that bad to do.

Sounds good! I may look into getting a V8 car and starting from there. I'll just wait till spring and go south since NY cars are normally pretty shot. My Dad looked at the car and said he was afraid to sit in the seat cuase the floors looked that bad
