Should I invest in this 66 Cpe?

Hey everyone,

I currently have a 96 GT and a 00 V6 but I want something more classic. I have always loved mustangs especially the 60's. I know of all the differences between the 64.5-66 and the 67-68 and so forth and what each is capable of.

But I found this 66 on craigslist and it is priced very reasonable and for its condition it will be a nice project.

66 mustang coupe good driver ! great christmas gift !!

My father has a newly rebuilt 302in his garage that he said I can have so it will be a S6 to V8 conversion. The 302 is punched over 30 with sealed power flat top pistons, forged rods and balanced crank. All ARP bolts. It has 198 stage 1 heads with a P&P and 5 angle valve job and a stage 1 cam. Edlebrock Low manifold or High rise (he has both) and a edlebrock carb, not sure of the size though.

Iwill mate that to a T5 5 spd and put in a 9" rear or a fox body rear if it will fit.

Any input or advice is appreciated. And input on the rear end choices that I made, I'm not too sure which will be best or fit. I'm not going to extreme with the build just whats mentioned motor wise above and a disc brake conversion and 5 lug.

What do you guys think? Possible? or am I getting in over my head with this?

Again input is welcome and needed for this. It will be my first restomod or major project at that and I'm kinda in the dark and need some light.

Looks really clean to me and even more so for the price. And it's a plus to get the 302 for free. I'd say it would be a good investment. Go check it out and make sure it looks that good in person. Looks like a good deal though

The car looks good, BUT it is a 6...

You have to look at replacing the Front and rear suspension. in the near future also.

Also you need now to just install the 302 these items

Radiator

Accel Linkage

Motor Frame mounts

5 Speed crossmember

Clutch pedal

Clutch linkages

I would rather buy a V-8 car with no motor then swap everything over for a 6.

Nice find. I wouldn't mind having that one. I just hate the vinyl tops though. They always rot through.

It is a little over my prince cap. The 6cyl one, I'm pretty sure he can be talked down and I have some money aside for the conversion. And I already have a free 302 for it and a T5 so that will be of no expense.

I just don't have 8k. I will take the advice given though and just look for a 8cyl shellinstead of converting.

Definitely look for a v8, not only do you have to get a lot of parts for the swap but you never know if you might decide to keep it a classic restoration once you buy it

That's a pretty good price IF there's not of rust hiding. First thing I would do if I looked at it would be to get a hose and spray it into the cowl. If that leaks, that's a couple hundred spot welds to drill out to do a proper fix. Then look for rust around the battery, floorboards, rocker panels, battery box, trunk, etc.

You would be better off spending $8500 on a car that doesn't have rust (it looks like it's been restored, but would still check) than $3500 on a car that's rusted. You'll easily rack up $5k (and HOURS of time) with fixing a lot of rust.

Regardless of what you find, I would replace the suspension, braking, and steering components. Even the '66 Mustangs that came with disc brakes take forever to stop compared to modern braking.

Will do. I forget what site is was but last night I looked at a whole bunch of stuff.

SSBC disc brakes front and back, new beefier modern suspension and bushings, and a full steering overhaul kit. I think it was like 2-4k depending on what kit and upgrades you got.

I might just use my 96 for a doner car and use the whole drive system, brake system, steering and suspension from it. Its up there in miles but I know this engine and trans has no problems and same for the rest of the mechanical stuff. The body on it is just very bad and its been totaled twice. Not worth it to spend money in this car.

What about that idea? I know you would need the tube K-member and cut the shock towers out of the 66 but idk.

The money spent there might not be worth it either. I'm just looking for a project/something to have for a while as my own. As well as a classic and most of all my favorite...... a Mustang.

Find a V8 car with no engine or tranny. You are just going to waste your time and money to make the I6 car into a V8 one.

I bought an I6 car, that someone had already started the V8 conversion on. The rear end had been swapped, and the front spindles/brakes were already in. Taking a quick stroll through my receipt spreadsheet and highlighting things that were directly related to the swap tallies around 2K. Some of that cost are things you SHOULD do anyway, but HAVE to do if you do the swap. Replace upper and lower control arms, new shocks, upgraded springs, new brake lines and MC to match upgraded brakes, new exhaust system, upgraded radiator. Others are things you can't skip, accelerator linkage, motor mount brackets, motor mounts etc.

Ok thanks for all the help and very useful info. I will try and find a V8 shell.

I thought about it and no matter what way i go about it, it will be a money pit. Once you get the mod bug it dont leave. And like i said, i plan on keeping it so a project car dont bother me. I have my DD mustang so this can sit in a garage for a year while its being done.

Im more interested in that I6 because the bodys in alot better shape than all the other reasonably priced classics around me. Im not good at body work but very mechanically inclined.
