Rebuilding 289, what to use for better HP?

Hello all
I have a 67 C code stang with 289 and want to rebuild it with better performance. Can anyone please steer me in the right direction as to what Cam, intake, carb, heads etc is a good match to get better performance and still have a street driveable car? Someone mentioned to me that there was a computer programe around the you can use to mix and match different parts and you could see the horsepower gain/loss with each combination. Also any suggested books would be appreciated. I also would like to add that I dont have a million dollar budget so if anyone has info on how to get a 289 up to around 300hp on a limited budget please add your info.
Thanks in advance!!

I would just go with cam and mabey you can get a stroker kit for a 289 I dont know but if you went with the stroker go wit a bigger carb like a 700 Holley something bigger than whats on it with a 4 barrel intake try and get and original 4bbl intake so it looks stock. I wouldnt do anything thats gonna make the motor look any different because I like the look of stock motors but that up to you if you want to do that

i'm building a 289 right now too, well its completely done except for a few minor things like pulleys and motor mounts. anyways its gonna be a great engine the things that are done to it include:

aluminum roller rockers
edelbrock performer RPM cam
edelbrock performer RPM AIR GAP intake manifold
edelbrock performer 600cfm 4-barrel carb.
ported and polished heads with stock sized valves
edelbrock sure seat 90lb. valve springs
shorty headers

the guy at the machine shop said this combo will easily put me at 300HP. good luck with the build man!

Forged internals will give you exactly 0 hp. It will hold a lot more hp, but you have to build the heads and valvetrain to make the hp.

To break the 300hp mark, you'll need a good heads, intake, cam combo.

I would agree, I run nothing but Holly, but for plug and play toss a Edelbrock on and go.

I've always had my best luck with Demons, but Holleys are decent for the average guy. Their easy to work on and easy to tune. If you know how to work on Edelbrocks, they're just as good as a Holley, but most people can't so they don't like them.
