any major brand is fine. There's no need to run a synthetic in the older engines, and I always run SAE30 in the older engines as well.

Why do you run a 30w and not a 10w-30?

I use that Valvoline high mileage for mine because my 351 came out of an old LTD and I know it had a few miles on it. It seems to be running fine. They say it took over to years to develop and it can improve gas mileage by 2 miles per gallon. In my car I don't know if thats true but like I said I don't have any problems with it.

Isn't oil's job to reduce friction on engine parts, in turn reducing wear on them making them last longer. I would like to think that the newer oils have more technology put into making them and do a better job of this.
Only thing I ever heard about oil weights is you should never go down a grade but you can go up. Ex : you can go from 30w to 40w but should not go from 40w to 30w.

I was thinking that the 302 in 1968 was just about the same as the one in 1980. I think its safe to use 10W-40 in you stang.

When single weight oil heats up it thins out and doesn't lubricate as well. During a hot summer they used to use 30-40w and in winter 10-20w. Multi-viscosity oil has an additive that prevents this. That way you can use the same oil winter & summer. If you drive your car hard most of the time, or live where it gets very hot +100*, use 10w40. If not, use 10w30.
