Rear end gear selection

about the car. 1966 w/ 68 302 moddified and a auto C4 tranny. my 66 has stock 2.80 8inch rear end and i am looking for performance only out of this car. 1/4 mile times is what im looking for. im tring to decide if i should go w/ the 3.80 or 4.11 locking rear end. i am leaning to the 4.11 however i don't want my top speed to be 80mph haha. also is it do-able to go from stock non-locking 2.80 to locking by just changing the center?

Go with the 4.11 but change that tranny out for a c6 or something with a little more gear. you can go to locking with just changing the center section as long as you get the center section with the same number of splines as the axles

thanks i think i am going to go 4.11. but i think my c4 is the same as the c6 except the c4 is light/med duty and the c6 is heavy duty for trucks. my 302 is not putting out a ton of power but it should be above 300+hp, so i think i can still get away with the c4. i could be wrong tho.

the 4.11's will give me a power conversion ratio of 10.11 and the 3.80's will be 9.3. currently i got a ratio of 6.88

ive also read that having a ratio above 9 is good so is 10 even better? or too much
