I was going to simply type that, but I've been in a semi-ouchy mood for some reason today. See my responses in the gt500 vs z06 thread for proof. lol Maybe it's the quitting cigs or some shit like that.

Rev your motor up to about 6k and slam it into drive (not really). 289s are not a lowend powerhouse. They get their power with RPMs. My 289 starts to get its power at 3k.How is your 289 setup? Do you have an auto?

Do you have the stock rear end gear changing out for something lower is the fastest way to get acceleration

Well without tearin down the block i would start with a torquer intake and a snappy carb.
